My current problem is that I am unable to connect to the servers for some reason. After I fix that, I will probably join the cadet program

So, I just found that I couldn't connect because of my firewall.
So now, I need to apply for the Cadet program and start playing more often.
I will probably redo the initial training first for good measures

Still pleanty of stuff on the INTERNET that'll $#@! you up however. You can get alleg to play through a firewall, the helpline folks should be able to help you get setup.

One thing not mentioned:
You don't pass the course unless you sign up for and take the test at the end. Instructors won't mark you as having done the course without passing the exam (which is open-book... or open-internet, if you will).
Passing will give you your wings and allow you greater opportunities for squad acceptance.
My experiences with Cadet were pretty much in line with everyone else. Extremely useful for new players. Safe forum for asking questions without risk of being ridiculed. Very knowledgeable instructors. Work at your own pace. Get to fly ships you usually would get yelled at for flying as a new player (some weeks, you're assigned to always be in a particular type of ship unless told otherwise by commander for strategic reasons). Get to observe squad games towards the end of the course.
Definitely worth it!
