The official VW statement (yes in English).

http://www.volkswagenag.com/content/vwcorp...rsuchungen.html

Dutch newspaper (*) reports VW made a 2 Bn Euro reservation for depreciation. It's about 800,000 petrol cars with "cheatware", and it is written that the cars have to make a trip to the garage.

Another Dutch newspaper (**) states the models, and writes it involves CO2:

VW Golf, Polo and Passat, Audi A1 and A3, Skoda Octavia, Seat Leon and Ibiza

It's not often you see such a large company completely implode like this. Are they trying to just jump right to the last page and go "too big to fail" so that the fatherland has to foot the bill ala the GM bailout? Hey... I think some people still made money on that deal... no?

And now, a short play about MrC's systemic issues in corporate culture.

Engineer: That's as good as I can get it.
Jerk Boss: I won't ask any questions about why that's as good as you can get it. Make it better, or I'll find someone who can.
Engineer: Ok, I made it better.
Jerk Boss: Wow, it only took you 5 minutes? Well, I won't ask any questions about how you made it better. I guess you can keep your job.
CXO: Wow, Jerk Boss, you're a great boss, you really get results. I'll just give you a promotion so I don't have to worry about how you got those results. Now go get results over in Porsche division too.
Board: Wow CXO, you really know your stuff. We don't really want to know how you do it, so here's a raise so that you'll stick around. Hope you never leave, or we'd have to pay attention to what's going on.
Individual Investor: Wow, my money market just went up .005%, so my total losses over the last 5 years is now only -$57k. I wonder if I'll ever make any money at this stock market thing. Well, I'm in it for the long haul, that's what my guy says to do, no question about it.

Many, as in hundreds, of people had to know or guessed about it. At every level up to the head of all VW Powertrain at the very least and probablyall the way to the top. It was a hotly debated point that VW could het those kinds of numbers at even our lunch table.

It is inconceivable a company that prides itself as being "car guy"centric as VW had a process that allowed a few people to make those kinds of changes unnoticed.

It is one thing to play the rule game smartly. I respect that and is done by all. It is another to lie, cheat and then arrogantly claim it as engineering prowess while doing it. Let me find a well.written Car and Driver blog on the subject.

Finally while I'm sure you meant no offense and until I walked the mile in my own shoes I don't really know etc... but I want to believe I would never be pushed into such an unethical response.

Thankfully I have never been put in that spot and to.never be put in the stew.

I'm wanting to understand the depth of the issue.

They claimed victim just the other day when the EPA.find even lorw sruff. Then they self report with few.details. I'm wondering if this "sin" is a fart in church variety to draw hit away from the bigger issues.

Hete it is

I do not buy the story of the "sneeky" engineers. VW would put themselves in all kind of legal and technical trouble if (a group of) engineers can change key software components without at least one manager noticing or approving it. Suppose a rogue tech installs malware. You try to start your VW car and the display prompts to send $100 in bitcoins first :D

Someone has okay-ed the software modification, my 2 cents.

To big to fail, see Deepwater Horizon incident. Shell is making money again.

Yeah but they're German and Germany doesn't go into the practice of throwing taxpayer money at corporations to keep them afloat, do they? I mean I don't know, I know it's how the US works...

Awww MrC, (chin chuck), you know we're brothers in function if not in form. Our planes may be slightly different, but we're rowing them with the same paddle shaped oars. I think there is a wealth of motivators here that anyone can fall victim to: ego, wealth, pride in ownership, peer pressure, fear of failure, "save the company", the good ol' sneaky pete, you name it. I really only had time for one act, but once we get off broadway, I've got plans to add an orchestra of cymbal playing chimps and full company of male ballet dancers to the show.

Anyway, that human factor is always the downfall, is it not?

Give them a pass as you see fit little brother, as is your right. I'm just trying not to get on the high horse. Even with the beer dispensing nipples, laser beam emitting eyes, gold nugget and rainbow producing backside it is a long way down when you get knocked off it with one of life's airplane oars wielded by psychic cymbal playing chimps aka as DuckWarrior...

Right?
