I turned my Raspberry PI 2 (the 1GB model) into an ad blocking DNS server on my home network. Point all my clients DNS requests to the PI, it's a lot easier and quicker than modifying the hosts file on multiple devices. I found it fun to toy with the PI.
Installation of the script was very easy but it does require some geek messing with settings on the router and the clients.
It works, but it's slow. It takes significantly longer to load "polluted" webpages full with trackers and ads since each request is filtered through a 1000+ line blacklist. CPU load of the PI is often at 100% when "filtering". Previously I used Adblock EDGE, which was faster. A hosts file on my pc is faster too.
If you are on a "metered" ISP it might be useful, it can save a few mb's.

I don't understand people using adblocker and similar tools.
Instead of avoiding crappy sites and sending them a clear message: fix your site or you'll get no traffic. It just sends the opposite message.
And it hurts good sites that have well placed and few ads.
On top of that it's like 'stealing content' and watching for free something that is not really free.
It's just a tool for lazy and tasteless people.

You know you can whitelist sites you like.
'bad' sites don't get ad revenue because there is no ad fetch, there is the punishment.
Do you sit through all the commercials during television? or are you a bad person and make a sandwitch or do something else during commercials?
If only there was some sort of device to make people look at something, oh yeah clockwork orange.

If you want to try this experiment yourself I suggest you delete or comment out "log-queries" in "/etc/dnsmasq.conf". I noticed the logfiles "messages" and "syslog" in "/var/log" filled up with debug information.
(Does that sound geek or not? I have much fun with the Raspberry PI, it's amazing what this little fellow can do).
Now that Windows 10 is free for the PI 2... I wonder... Freealleg on a PI? Would that even be remotely possible?

how many people using adblockers actually whitelist sites ?
I don't mind 10% adblocked visitors on big, low quality content web sites: it's just a way for smarter people to get content they barely care about anyway.
But when you try to build a good site with good content aimed at a smarter audience, you end up seeing 50%+ of your visitors using adblockers.
Adblockers are killing the few free high quality content web sites, well not exactly killing but forcing them to change their economic model: in the end you'll have to pay something directly because in the first place you installed an adblocker. That's fine if you're aware of this and want this for the future of the Internet. But if you don't want this then don't whine in 10 years when you'll have to pay for most of the good content...or end up only seeing "sponsored" content.
Most people using an Adblocker haven't actually thought about the consequence of their action, they just want the immediate benefit and think they're just one person among billions users so it doesn't matter. It does matter.
