KGJV is right, back when allegiance were on a dying bed and Microsoft about to pull the plug on allegiance and they did, young personal , van cain , pooky bear, spunk, KGJV and few other people that I forget
let not forget SOLAP revise allegiance from a dying bed, I told myself, why not hire an attorney to contact Microsoft if I can buy the allegiance copy right, KGJV asking me why buy when it is free if you buy what are you going to do with it
I told KGJV, I would gave it back to community after few months later allegiance founder and solap release open sources code and back then I knew once people got the sources code, there gonna be a lot of hack and abuse
I stop playing allegiance when perm ban metz, after seven years of stop playing I got back and a lot of things have chance and metz were unban, I though allegiance community have change for the good but I was wrong
the community need to work with in itself, get more players and stop abuse new players, once the community become strong then think about allegiance 2 or copy right.. now is the time to learn from our past mistake
fix the problem with in our self. 200 players at any giving day is a good indicator that our community is strong.

I am not adamant about anyone helping - it is just that we are not at the stage where we need help beyond development - development is the largest piece of the cake all of the other bits can be done once we have something to show.

I thought I would write a lengthy post with a lot of explanation - but I simply do not have time to do that. In short, I think what Dome is doing with marketing is right and necessary not only for alleg1 but for any potential projects that could spawn from it. Getting rights to alleg I think is very tricky and may not bring us as much as we expect - putting the game on steam as it is now is the best outcome, getting those rights to allow us to switch engine is madness. Alleg2 project can use old models as placeholders but will require new models no matter the case, as otherwise it will look as bad as alleg does currently defeating the point of a new engine.

Don't get too caught up in getting the rights so you can put it up on Steam, etc. Not long ago I witnessed a game in a somewhat similar situation to Allegiance be made completely free. Its not exactly the same in that it was already on Steam but went from paid to free versus already being free and not on Steam. But I'm sure the result would be similar here.

When the announcement was made that the game went free it got a decent amount of press (which is less likely to happen from an already free game being put on Steam) and the first two months or two were very promising. The game hadn't had so many players in years. However it did not take long for the buzz to go away and then the community was in nearly the same situation it was in before.

Yes being able to put it on Steam, etc will certainly help but it is not going to result in a huge, permanent increase in players. Like I certainly wouldn't be thinking much about paying lots of money to Microsoft for the rights unless you were intending to develop Allegiance 2. The only thing that is going to revive the community is a proper, modern remake whether it be Allegiance 2 or clone of Alleg.

Sent this to the internal Microsoft LCA list for third-party copyright permissions, will let you know if I get a response:

QUOTE Apologies in advance if this is the not the right email alias for such inquires.

I’m looking for a LCA contact who can answer some questions regarding shared-source software which is no longer supported by Microsoft since 2001. I wasn’t able to find answers to these questions on LCAWeb or the guidelines posted at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/legal/intel...ty/permissions/.

I’m involved with a gaming community (http://freeallegiance.org/) which has been maintaining and extending a game called Allegiance for the past 11 years. Allegiance was initially developed by MSR in 2000, discontinued in 2001, and released under the Microsoft Research Shared Source license agreement (MSR-SSLA) in 2004 (a copy of which can be found here).

Recently we have been looking at ways we could better promote the game and grow the community. Although our interest is non-commercial, we had a few questions we wanted clarification on:

* Does the shared-source license permit us to redistribute Allegiance as a Free-to-Play game via commercial gaming sites or marketplaces (particularly Steam)?
* Does the shared-source license permit us to modify Allegiance in ways that integrate it with a commercial gaming site or services (again, such as Steam)? Examples of such modifications would be leaderboards, instant messaging, friends lists, social networking, etc.
* If the shared-source license does not permit us to redistribute Allegiance via commercial marketplaces, or integrate with their services, how could we go about getting such permission?[/quote]
