If the shooter actually checked the IFF and if the Ukraine Air Force hasn't been spoofing civilian flights and if etc etc etcpkk wrote:QUOTE (pkk @ Jul 23 2014, 03:16 AM) Right, IFF takes hours to send it's identification code...![]()
QUOTE It is mounted a a tank, carries it's build in electric generator, so deployment time is pretty short, should take less than 30 secs if you operate autonomous (from my experience with Gepard, Roland and LeFlaSys). But normally you operate at a fixed location, you're covering your part of the sky. This system is not build to escort convoys and provide cover on the move.
You also have to remember, that the missiles can reach mach 3.
Ukranine has Buk-M1, so it's not the first generation.
SA7 -> SA11 (first TASER system) -> SA17 etc is how I read the Aussie site. There were a bizzilion differences upgrades too.
Range on the radar (according to wiki again *shudder*) is 80 miles
Plane is flying apporximately 10 miles a minute and is 5 miles in altitude (popular press)
Missile Range is 30 miles (wiki again)
Missile speed is about 40 miles a minute (acccording to pkk
Im going to say the missile hits cruising speed in about 30 seconds
Assuming the plane is going to fly right over the launcher (to maximize time) you have a minute and half until it is right overhead
After that you have about another 45 seconds until the plane will "out run" your missile
It is high school physics level bs, "best case", and Im not taking a million variables that someone with your training knows right of the top of their head but it seems to me:
2 minutes and 15 seconds is an eternity for a well trained crew all things being equal but if it was an undersized and/or poorly trained crew than 2minutes and 15 seconds is *snap*
If it was flying at the edge of their range than the decision would have to made pretty darn quick for even an experienced crew. The KISS priniciple points to the rebels making a mistake my friend.
edit2: ugh I just realized that is the launch window but the decision window is longer 4mins and 15s. I also read your post to Adept and agree with you too
QUOTE There is no radar network within Buk system, there is a central target designation radar (360 degree for command post) and the launchers radar (less than 150 degree, search and acquisition radar).
If you ever served within a SAM unit, you would understand the propose of such a command post with designation radar.
I haven't, you have apparently, and thanks for the clue my friend. Just a small point here but I believe you put words in my errrm fingertips. here. I NEVER said the unit needed outside radar to hit the target.
edit: wrote 2m 45s and it was supposed to be 2m 15s
