And deserve a kick in the naughty bits (for you Raum) if the reason I read was they flew into airspace with active anti aircraft to save a few shekels on fuel

Well whether or not the route was safe to fly was, evidently, a mixed opinion amongst international aviation authorities. The FAA and many other agencies advised against it, but the ICAO said it was safe. Other airlines were using that route as well.

Bad year for Malaysia Airlines, sad for those passengers. Its about to be a bad year for Russian separatists as well.

What do the Ukrainians have to gain by shooting down any planes.

The Russians are the ones trying to further destabilize the region to break Ukraine apart. But shooting down an airliner doesnt benefit them either. It was probably a cockup by the "rebels" they are supplying

The nationality list is indeed not complete. It seems no Americans were on board, or they must have used another country passport.

It also seems very unlikely a portable rocket launcher could have shot down a plane flying that high. If it was an "mistake" by someone, they must have used a "real" anti aircraft system.

/edit: it's most likely one of these weapons as shown in a demo movie on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDXScnEKaP0

There was some speculation about Putin flying the same route 1 hour before the Malaysian plane so that would have been the target. The article was later removed from a Dutch newspaper website, and RT.com denies Putin flying there.

The second flight recorder seems to have been found.

While Ukrainians $#@!ed-up in the past it's equally likely it was a typical "monkey with a razor" move by separatists... No one with a good knowledge of this SAM system would risk shooting something "blind".

I'm shocked that airlines show no common sense when it comes to flying over such areas anyway...

As I read the Dutch papers, it seems a fairly safe air route. No one expected an airplane would be in danger flying at 10 km high.

That one is easy:

Ukraine:
Internationalize conflict to get more support from Western countries, while blaming separatists.

Separatists:
Escalate the conflict to get Russia actively evolved, while blaming Ukraine.

To be sure what happened you have to find fragments of the warhead within the plane wreckage and analyze the blackbox data.

Everyone should remember the stories about the Maidan snipers... The case is still not investigated if it were Berkut unites or right winged protesters.
