Presumption of innocence is a bitch, isn't it?HSharp wrote:QUOTE (HSharp @ Jul 16 2013, 02:53 PM) There are two sides to the story, the only thing is that you only have Zimmerman's side because Martin is dead.
It does not logically follow that since blacks are often denied the presumption of innocence, that everyone (and Zimmerman especially) shouldn't get the benefit of the doubt either.Icky wrote:QUOTE (Icky @ Jul 15 2013, 02:06 PM) If a black man with a record of resisting arrest, assaulting police officers, domestic violence, and a restraining order shot a 17 year old white kid walking home you can be fairly certain they wouldn't just drop it.
It's a data point for sure; just as much a data point as any other "guns saved my life" anecdote.Raveen wrote:QUOTE (Raveen @ Jul 15 2013, 11:50 PM) I can't help but wonder if it wouldn't have been better if Zimmerman wasn't allowed to carry a gun. This isn't really a gun control issue but I suspect that this event would simply not have occurred if guns weren't so prevalent.
Tough cases make bad law. You can't make policy decisions solely on the basis of what high-profile stories the media is going to latch on to.

Yeah, that research has been done. IIRC it was something like an 8:1 ratio in the favour of murder vs life saved.cashto wrote:QUOTE (cashto @ Jul 17 2013, 12:46 AM) It's a data point for sure; just as much a data point as any other "guns saved my life" anecdote.

I like how clear it is based on these statements that you haven't read either anything in this thread or anything of substance on the issue outside of this thread.Dome wrote:QUOTE (Dome @ Jul 17 2013, 06:10 AM) Zimmerman will probably still lose when he's sued, like OJ. And he will always be recognized.
Killing people has a consequence. He skirted jail time on a stupid Florida law and a bad prosecution, but his life will never be the same.
The thing that annoys me most about this case, and what initially prompted me to post this thread, is that people get very heated about the case and start spouting all kinds of opinions without bothering to actually find out any facts of the case. Reading one news article that barely scratches the surface regarding the evidence in the case is not educating yourself about the case. It is also very clear to me based on what people are saying and writing that most of the opinions about the case are based largely on poorly researched news articles and broadcasts.
I don't mind if you want to remain ignorant about the details of the case. It doesn't impact most people, after all. But if you're going to form an opinion, especially a strong opinion, you should really take a look at the facts of the case. It really took me only about 10 minutes to find out what the actual testimony and evidence was in the case.

people are pissed at the law/justice system because they feel increasingly disenfranchised due to the way racism influences our justice system as a whole and other important sectors of our society, like education
this situation and this case have been a vessel for those frustrations, and it's no surprise people are so upset about the verdict - regardless of facts or evidence - because they feel it reinforces the dominant, racist paradigms of our society

More because they feel that they could be next.NightRychune wrote:QUOTE (NightRychune @ Jul 17 2013, 07:01 PM) this situation and this case have been a vessel for those frustrations, and it's no surprise people are so upset about the verdict - regardless of facts or evidence - because they feel it reinforces the dominant, racist paradigms of our society
