Looking for a good solo player game
Skyrim should be good bang for your buck, or you could try that Batman Arkham games.
A non-steam game might be safer if you are going to a dodgy internet connection zone as it can be annoying if the game is trying to update so it won't let you play it, something from gog.com is a safer choice, they have some newer games like The Witcher, and The Witcher 2, although there are a lot of great oldies like Dungeon Keeper (2), Silver, Fallout etc...

Hey paps, I think you might enjoy the Witcher games. Its a pretty long RPG but its a lot more mature than the rest of the lot. Plus you get to bang like every chick + boob physics. Choices are more the lesser of two evils rather than black vs white like everything else out there. Drawback is that they really dont have many different character models, you see the same looking guys in different colors all over the place. The Witcher 2 looks like its playable on lowest settings for you as well.
Not sure if you ever tried splinter cell but Chaos theory and Pandora Tomorrow were pretty much the best of the lot. Its a lot slower paced but you fly a scout so maybe its right up your alley. People have recommended Thief as another great stealth game but I havent played it so no first hand report. Hitman: Blood Money is also pretty good.
If you never played them you could get Half life 2 and its episodes, your laptop will run those just fine for your shooter fix. The Portal games are also fun but with a lot more emphasis on puzzles.
You might get away with running Dead Space 2 for more of a horror survival shooter thingy
Hope that helps!

Thief series are absolutely awesome, might be hard to get started with thief 1 and 2 because of dated gfx though....
Dishonored is pretty good.
Deus Ex: HR is reasonably decent too.
Gothic series (except forsaken gods) and Risen series are also phenomenal.
All Bioware games are worth looking at too.
