After thinking about this, I think that the link he sent you contained a session ID. Normally IPB removes the session ID from URLs, but for some reason it was within that URL.

For a while i included the domain into my password.. so my passowrd here was freeallegiance.com12345. But it sucked to remember a password for every different webpage. This is also a dump way to simplify your password.

Alpha numeric, helps but shouldn't go over the top.
Pass-phrases are where it's at since you can remember them and sentences tend to be very long.

You can substitute some numbers for characters if you want, or maybe include them in the phrase
I haven't changed my password 7 times.
Proper punctuation means you get some bonus unusual characters like ',!.
