Main advantage in combat is it makes you a lot harder to hit. The only other viable way to keep your target in your crosshairs is to slow-down or stop, which will make you an easy target.
Factions do side-thrust at different speeds (I think Belters can fly sideways as fast as they can fly forward - most factions are around 50%). Couldn't find a good chart listing the differences on the wiki, if you look through change logs you can see where it is tweaked. I believe you can pull it up in a tool called ICE.
Also, if you use vector lock (L is default I believe) it will of course lock your vector, but as it uses side thrusters to maintain motion, you will lose velocity when you are not facing forward.

ya the info on faction specific perks/nerfs on sidethrusting is either hard to find or just missing from the wiki. you can help out by making a chart of faction vs sidethrusting capabilities! as mentioned previously by FIZ, investigate with ICE.
