Well, personally, I mapped my WASD keys to sidethrusters.
Watch the bullets, and side thrust away from their path, try to be unpredictable, and move in ways that make the lead indicator less effective.

It is Karnage! Don Karnage! Roll the r!
unpredictable is a double edged sword, sure your enemy will take time to adjust their aim but so will YOU. When you thrust you force the same vectors on yourself and you'll have to compensate for them. Meanwhile if your enemy has a pattern, even if its complicated like left thrust, up thrust, down thrust, right thrust, left thrust, etc. then they'll get used to those vectors and compensating for them becomes second nature, so in a battle they only have to compensate for the vectors you throw down.
This is why you should definitely start thrusting, but try to find a pattern that works for you. The pattern I listed above is ineffective by the way, if you up thrust then down thrust it'll cancel the vectors essentially making you a sitting target. A good easy pattern is simply making a circle. Thrust left, up, right, down, left, and continue.
P.S. when you thrust in different directions, try to hold down a certain thrust key for a few seconds instead of rapidly switching inbetween them. It allows you to gain more speed and become harder to hit whereas if you just thrust fast in all different directions, you once again will find yourself cancelling vectors and become a sitting duck.

Consider ranges on weapons as well. If you want to avoid, say, interceptor damage, try to stay around 400-500 away (depending on faction modifiers and range GAs). Opponents will typically have a harder time hitting you from further ranges anyway.
From turret damage from a bomber, 1500 will keep you save, although in mass combat at 1000m you won't be much of a target and will probably be able to take out scouts trailing behind trying to do repairs.
