Hey fwiffo, nice game you got here but holy #@!$ are there ever a lot of buttons to push.
Just picture me as some old guy who wandered in off the street with his hospital gown on backwards. I suspect that it will take my calcified brain a little while to pick up the important details.
Right now I am having trouble getting the game to run so I will have to sort that out.
I have had a few battles so I am familiar with being podded. Apart from simple familiarity with the controls my problems are selecting the best thing to go after and battle techniques. That and everything else that I dont even know about.
Anyway, cheers.

A great bunch of stories too. I always got a laugh out of the idea of a govt with a bureau of sabotage to keep everyone on their toes.

Come visit the Helpline and post up if you're having issues.
ahahah you are in great company as it might surprise you to know that a lot of us playing do not fall in the typical teenager crowd... the beauty of allegiance is that you do not have to have twitch reflexes or superb aim to be useful. experience and brainpower often trumps hot shot dmers, so bring your thinking cap to class... we're about to get a kick out of pwning some voobs with finesse.
if you have discovered the keymapping feature (ESC, g, c) it's important to realize that you do not need to map every last item. if you want to see what i have mapped personally, go to http://spathiwa.com and look for the keyboard icon at the top. that's the inputmap1.mdl file you can use to replace your existing one. more instructions on how to do this over at the wiki here

Thanks for the welcome and replies.
OK I seem to be running again. So some questions.
1. What ship to choose? Does it change depending on where you are in the game and how do you decide?
2. Do you just stick with the default load out?
3. What is the quickest way to figure out what the hell I am supposed to be doing? I get the attack the other guys part but how do I figure out what the rest of the team is doing and where they are?
4. I can navigate around ok but I am not sure that I am using the quickest methods or routes.
5. What questions should I be asking?

yes of course. if you are at the start of the game, it's best that you take out a scout with a nan in cargo and the rest probes. this loadout gives a beginning player the most potential to be useful. why? because probes are easy to deploy (see probing)
if you join a game already in progress and notice quickly that a base is under attack. take a look at whats going on in command view (f3), while in base. if it looks like your team is mounting a defense, then hop to it and get out the best available ship to defend with (this is often not a scout...) choosing the right ship depends on what ships you have at your disposal, playing more will help you determine this.
if you join a game and u notice that your team are all in pods, everyone's screaming for pickups because the enemy bbr is gonna roll another base, make an assessment on where you can launch (w/o getting podded) and boost to pick up your team to be the instant hero.
2. Do you just stick with the default load out?
almost never except the interceptor and all its variants (lt, int, hvy int).
scout loadout is heavily configured depending on what you want to do.
figs, i replace one of the two ammo racks into fuel so i can boost further. (if you are belters and you require to nan, u can either replace an ammo into a nan or just change the loaded gat into a nan, if u need to launch and nan right away... ie. when you are saving a miner)
3. What is the quickest way to figure out what the hell I am supposed to be doing? I get the attack the other guys part but how do I figure out what the rest of the team is doing and where they are?
f7 brings up minimap while u are flying. works in command (f3) view too!. fastest way to see whats going on. use your mouse to hover over the diff sectors and right click on those sectors to get a better idea of what is going on)
alternatively you can press f6 to look at the listing of both your teammates (and the enemies too.. you get their last seen status). if you notice that most everyone are all concentrated in one sector, that could be where the party is at
4. I can navigate around ok but I am not sure that I am using the quickest methods or routes.
unsure what u mean, pls elaborate
5. What questions should I be asking?
if you have no joystick. be sure to use mouse+keyboard combo to fly. press numpad 0 to activate mouse flying. arrow keys are not the way to go...
also play with the graphics resolution to make things prettier. i play at 1440x900. (esc,D,H). i also like to turn off the extraneous graphics that clutters my F3 view... you can ask me in game for those.
I donno if you've seen the Quick Crash Course ... if you haven't check it out. Anyhoo, it says this on the subject on getting from point A to point B in the most expeditious way possible:Retief wrote:QUOTE (Retief @ Apr 30 2012, 05:42 PM) 4. What do you do when you're in one sector and you want to be in another?
Fly there: the slowest method, but sometimes there is no alternative! Teleport there: if there is a teleport receiver in the sector, you can click on the sector in the minimap to ripcord there. Dock and transfer there: if flying there takes too long and there's a base but no teleport receiver in the sector, then the smartest thing to do is to dock at the closest base and use F8 to transfer to the sector. When you press F8 the minimap will appear along with a list of bases and their location. You can either select the base you want, or click on the sector on the minimap. Using the minimap is faster but if there is more than one base you may end up in the wrong one.
