The first thing is a sliding window, that will clear up a large amount of the problems.
1) It will more effectively rank returning vets.
2) Newbies will no longer suffer from the initial loses penalizing them pretty much forever.
3) The ranks will once again move, albeit slowly though better than the almost non-existant movement now.
75% of votes are in favour of a slidding window that counts the last 1000 games equally with all the rest of their games.
The second is that Sigma needs to not get pinned down so low and so quickly, it needs to have Tau allow more change in suprising circumstances and Sigma shouldn't get pinned down so narrowly after only 50 games.
Thrid is that Sigma needs to revaluate player performance by fully or partially resetting occasionally, annually for example, it still allows the old data to be important but it takes a harder look regularly, if player performance is the same then you've a minor to no change, if as some say experience pays off then you see a larger effect.
Fourth is that comparing player performance against players no longer playing is kind of fruitless as one view. After a year inactive the system should park old accounts and not consider them until after a player returns and only after they've played the 50-100 games to reestablish their skill level.
I think all the above should be considered and I think we should start making changes now this subject is too important to be relegated for another 5 years of study with no changes. This is part and parcel to the reason why people can become disenchanted with alleg, ranks need to move, players need to see change, people want it.
In closing the other thing that will help is that while we consider a staged release of changes to ranking that we also have the displayed ranks go from 30 to 50 over the next year. We're actually using 50 ranks, so let's display it, heck you can even display it to 100 ranks if you wanted (currently displayed ranks are X0.6, we can instead X2.0) since among other things this will allow people to see ranks change 333% heavier simply because of the larger numbers.

Reseting ranks is useless, if you don't enforce balance.Ryujin wrote:QUOTE (Ryujin @ Feb 21 2012, 06:25 PM) why not just reset ranks with hider resets?

I'm not following this... Your rank considers all the games you've played or if a sliding window is in effect, all within the window. What do you mean a reset?

Not following this either. The performance is only compared to people you are playing against..

Reset Sigma to 8.333 for example, increases uncertainty and values the next X games if you just started playing, it doesn't reset the ranks but rather the value it considers them at going forward.
Ignore that, I was thinking of something else at the time and got distracted.Spunkmeyer wrote:QUOTE (Spunkmeyer @ Feb 21 2012, 08:03 PM) Not following this either. The performance is only compared to people you are playing against..

Rank = (Mu - (Sigma x 3)) x 0.6
