Ask 10 random people what they hope to gain from it and how they hope to do it and their answers make many of the Tea Party participants seem like geniuses. Its just the other end of the political spectrum's lowest common denominator is all.
They have no agenda, no central theme, and no plan by design. It was to stop attacks in the media, and include anyone with any kind of grudge while they built enough headway via bottom of the TV streamers and beathless talking heads. Not everyone is a moron who is involved in this thing.
Hmmm Im wondering if there is to much disdain on my part for these folks cause I expect them to actually propose something other then shout stuff, where I only expected the Tea Party people to shout stuff and they proposed something.... interesting damned by higher expectations perhaps
here you go live stream from the Detroit site complete with commercials
After watching the NY one for an hour a few times a few weeks back I can see there is a difference between the two atm. The one here hasn't quite turned into the ren festival for hipsters yet. Im thinking it probably won't given most people here have my attitude, call me when you got a plan.
edit 9000:
Matter of fact Germ I'm going down there right now and take a look around again and this time with less of an attitude. If you hear someone shouting Heyoka and Germ's penis you'll know it was me. OMW batton down the hatchs

Ugh Germ you're writing a book and I cant wait any longer cause want to get moving before it gets to dark for the video portion. Wanted to get your thoughts but to late
I will TRY to:
Get five people to answer these three question on livestream
1. What made you come down to the protest
2. What are you protesting
3. What do you think will help make the thiings you are protesting better
I'll try to make the people I ask a cross section of age, race, and appearance too
Hope this works and I may chicken out on the livestream cause Im camera shy
Heyoka and Germ's Penis
just in case I do grow feathers

Just to play devil's advocate for a bit

<bp|> Maybe when I grow up I can be a troll like PsycH
<bp|> or an obsessive compulsive paladin of law like Adept
No reason to play Devil's Advocate... matter of fact you are not, you are playing advocate
(Being a devil's advocate would be taking my POV)
Ok read it. In no way does it address the fundamental failings of the New York version of Occupy Wall Street
a) they had no message until the generic 14 points
b) they have no solutions
The Detroit version is similar and different to what Ive seen on the livecast, read online, and was told by word of mouth. I listened to a Free Press reporter asking questions to someone from the protest group. I'll be interested to read what is written tomorrow given I heard the same things that they did and watched them in action.
I asked as wide of a cross section as possible the three questions above plus another I thought of later
4) How are you different then the Tea Party people and why were they so much more effective, so quickly
tl;dr write up to follow

"And, by the way, few people would have a problem with inequality if the American Dream were still fully intact—if it were easy to work your way into that top 1%. But, unfortunately, social mobility in this country is also near an all-time low."

The Detroit version is in many ways different then the Wall Street version at least in my linited view of events
First, for the moment, they have the local support of some of the businesses in the area including the use of a building for mundane things like using the bathroom. Next they have a semi-sympathic ear of the city government including a permit to occupy and erect tents. The people who the New York 99% are annoyed with are already there and appear to be respectful to the newcomers. The city police show their face and there appears to be no sense of intimidation but rather they are there to insure everyone is safe and sound. Several gentlemen who would be at home on any professional football team's front line also make regular rounds while I was down there this time. Things are, and I am guessing, more dangerous here given there has been violence going on around them at night according to one of the protestors along with an occasional lose of their cars to theft. No civil disobedience in and around the area... again while I was there.
My last look at them was when I went down to an eatery right across the street although I did not step into the area since you can see it all from across the street. I was underwhelmed to be honest. Germ's response made me think enough to go back down and actually talk to someone.
It's small not even 100 tents in all Im guessing but they are feeding everyone, holding daily meetings, and planning on more activists protests that will get them more exposure to the media. Its reasonablely mixed in terms of race and gender among the protestors but I will say that WASP males seem to be the slight majority. Unfailingly polite, clean, non threatening, advocating absolutely no violence, willing even eager to speak to me and answer my silly questions. They all listened politely to my politely worded thoughts on their mission.... even when it wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement. The message from a quiet walk about is the hodge podge you'd expect from this type of gathering. People who wanted us to honor the life of "Muamar Gadhafi" and angry at the NATO lynching, an advocate for a universal language, people unhappy that money left in the slots goes back to the casinos instead of charity etc etc.
They appear to be a bit more serious and more on point then the origional protestors, but then again I did not directly speak to the New Yorkers. It still felt like people pissed at how things are without clear answers but willing to admit they weren't. Those who were felt like organizers quite openly discussed the shortcomings and mistakes of the New York protests during its early stages ( they agreed with my criticisms almost across the board btw ) and hoped to avoid them here. When someone mentioned the New Yorkers 14 points all being good ones I frowned every so slightly and got an apology for their going for the pat answer because the person had been up for days. They said (the apparent organizers), " be patient with us we are trying to do this on the fly, Detroit style, be inclusive, be in plain sight to discuss things with the likes of you, and its been just a week". They are quite aware that the clock is ticking and if they $#@! it up then it will be a bad thing for their hoped for change for the better.
I will say there is little sympathy for them from the Lions fans who walked through the park after the game. Many smart ass comments and even one dude who dropped popcorn on the ground to attract the pigeons. I most likely made both the livestrean, and two local broadcasts but only as a backdrop to the interviewers and "color". I even got told myself to get a job, and one of the very earnest protestors got to tell him, "He has a job, designing cars" (he had asked my background and job)) the person turned to me with a look of
. I give him a grin and told him I was there to found out why these people had the balls to camp in area you were to scared to walk through at night. I thought they all were going to hug me
I'm going to toodle off for now but I will, as promised, give you their responses to the best of my ability.

Thats awesome that you actually went out and took a look for yourself chaos, mad props. I didnt end up going, a mix of laziness and the small issue of me being in the military and what happens if i get arrested or put on some camera saying something stupid etc, and i couldn't find anyone to go with me. But i will end up going sometime this week for sure.
Nice post, after reading it i really regretted not going, seeing events/people like that tend to restore my faith in humanity.

Hereis the article from the reporter I listened to talking to the protestor. Not much to it and sympathic given a couple of people he spoke with were... ahh a bit wacky. Btw I lost the entire damn write up about what they said to me yesterday to internetz gods so I'll try again tonight. * shakes fist * darn you click to nowhere!
