Hi there!
Just checking in, thanks for the welcome and I'm glad to see the community still alive!
Welcome New Players!
Hi I'm GoodWill.
I have been playing about 10 matches so far and had a blast.
Yesterday, I shot down my first bomber and was about to kick my first miner
on my own when the game suddenly ended in forfeit for my team ...
It wasn't a very big game and the commander would have needed me in
a fignan to support the bombrun in enemy-territory.
Well, that's newblife: You think you are doing fine while commiting
a series of totally unexpected mistakes at the same time.
At least next time I will know that Belters can mount anything on anything.
So, if you see me idling around or doing something entirely "useless" ...
please ... don't kick me right away ... a good share of your probe-network
has most likely been deployed by me in the early game-phase and I need to learn.

Good evening,
My name is Skeletor and I've come back after an eight year hiatus and have realized that I remember almost nothing about Allegiance except that I love it and regret that I wasted all eight years not playing.
Some of you may have seen me and podded me with no effort. Nice to meet you too.

Hello,
As you already guessed, I'm totally new to that game. I just hit GoogleIsYourFriend with words "sci fi", "free" and "mmorpg" and found FA after several others games my computer couldn' run (yeah, low-end laptop here).
I'd say I was lucky since I was not exactly searching for a fast-paced-shoot'm-up game with zillions things to kill while hitting the left mouse button 1000 times per second and screaming "MWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGFF !" but rather a game online, which takes place in sci-fi world with a kind of role playing touch and last but not least without anyone saying the word "Noob!" endlessly whatever you do (I leave the latter to my kids when they are playing).
Actually I'm definitely not a fast-paced gamers (although sometimes it's nice mainly to evacuate stress). I prefer by far games like xxx:Total War when playing offline or Anarchy Online when playing ... Oops, I was about to say something stupid.
Well ... I immediately started with Tutorials missions just to find out I was a miseserable and total failure at some stages (expected result). I did, so far, twice that last "Naning" mission and I'm afraid both Constructor and Bombers were quickly destroyed by opposing forces. I guess I'll have to figure out how to avoid to be shot down -- I tried to use boosters left/right/up/ dow... ah no, not "down" one since I exploded before.
Oh, one thing about tutorials : the "Instructor" is speaking only while in flight, and for me it was quite hard to understand whe she/he said : is there any mean to write what she/he say on the screen (in chat for example) ? I can better understand writings than live speaking, including the fact it sounded like a radio-speaker (they are able to fly in space, build huge vessels but the sound through the speaker is still poor flat quality ?)
Anyway ... I closed the game and started to take several days to explore the Wiki and to read all AFS and Cadet stuff. I have to say it was ... delightful ? I'd like to thanks the people who were involved in writings those guides : comprehensive, sense of humor, etc.
I installed the server and launched a LAN game (hard time to figure out that you have to untick the empty team before starting it ; it's not that obvious since I ticked the "allow empty team" on server). I remaped my keyboard (heavily relyed on Wiki's relevant page) and got used to scout, manoeuver it using side boosters, probing, gathering money and other random flying stuff, auto-pilot, travelling to other sectors, loading/unloading stuff with impact on ship signature, pod-ed myself by ramming a rock and see how it is to go back home, reading map, use F3 screen, and all those little things I was able to do at that time.
I didn't try to buy any more advanced spacecraft (bombers, fighters, etc.) yet as I thought that before masterizing scout it'll take time so not to say about the fighters-class which I leave for much later time.
I didn't understand why buying a Supremacy (or whatever other Tech name) ship didn't allowed me to buy/research Supremacy technology but that wasn't my main goal anyway ; I leave that for later.
As I felt I was somewhat ready to play online on some newbie games I logged in but I only found that 2 "games" where running (or did I misunderstood it ?), one with 14/100 (or was it 300 ?) and second, on a german server, with 0/100 (or 300).
That leads directly to my question : is there any european players anymore ? Vacation time maybe could be the cause ... or wrong online time (I was online around 17h00 GMT+2) ? I'll retry soon and check : that game seems THAT nice I can't just resign playing it at least a few times.
I won't use Mumble at all for two main reasons. First, I can't really understand everyday-english (accent, slang, etc.) and second, I don't want to disturb all the family around if I have to speak loud and clear : I play in main room where my wife and kids are too (watching movie, reading, playing, etc.). I hope that voice-chat is not a mandatory prerequisite to play the game ...
Well, that's about all for a quick text to introduce myself, I'm looking forward to see you in game.

Training missions, except the last one, are 10+ years old and nobody really cared about improving them, until now.Mumufx wrote:QUOTE (Mumufx @ Aug 26 2011, 11:56 AM) Well ... Current training missions 1-5 are only about learning the controls.
You could also have played online, there is no need to start your own LAN server to play a solo game.Mumufx wrote:QUOTE (Mumufx @ Aug 26 2011, 11:56 AM) I installed the server and launched a LAN game (hard time to figure out that you have to untick the empty team before starting it ; it's not that obvious since I ticked the "allow empty team" on server). Between 8 am till 18 pm UTC it's pretty quiet. People usually play on only one server. Depending on time, people play on a US or European. People are also to lazy to switch to another server, after the game ended...Mumufx wrote:QUOTE (Mumufx @ Aug 26 2011, 11:56 AM) As I felt I was somewhat ready to play online on some newbie games I logged in but I only found that 2 "games" where running (or did I misunderstood it ?), one with 14/100 (or was it 300 ?) and second, on a german server, with 0/100 (or 300).

The Escapist (Justin Emerson) @ Dec 21 2010, 02:33 PM:
The history of open-source Allegiance is paved with the bodies of dead code branches, forum flame wars, and personal vendettas. But a community remains because people still love the game.
Hmmm.. he's read the documentation, read the wiki, installed his own LAN server.... he's a witch! Burn the witch!
Just kidding, of course.
Welcome!
PS: No, Mumble isn't necessary. Reading the in-game chat, though, is highly important, as is flying with the mini-map up at all times. Once you learn the icons of the mini-map it'll help tremendously with understanding the game and situational awareness.

@PKK :
Thanks, I didn't know I could start my own game online. I did it yesterday. Is there any Dumb AI Bot to fill the second team (online or LAN one) so I can test different things requiring a second player (mainly thinking about Eye/signature, at which point a Miner is damaged enough to go back home for repair, etc.).
And thanks again for indicating me the right time where people are much online. It was a pleasure to be able to play that game yesterday evening/night.
@FreeBeer :
Beer ? Mmmh ... ** checking if few bottles still in the fridge ** Thanks to remind me to check even if mine aren't free at all.
Well, I usually try to read about the game I'm about to play. And if possible, test alone what I red. I can't imagine playing while my nose is sticking on the paper "What key is 'target ennemy' mmmh ... Let's see ... ah, it's ... KABOOM!".
As for chat I read it, at 90 %. 10 % is because my brain is busy to some other tasks such as reading the map, avoid that sticky Interceptor or similar.
I faced many ... opposite orders yesterday during my few first games (by the way, that was great !). Many opposite orders is little bit confusing so I tried to rely on own perception of what seemed to be the most usefull task I can do (often a failure though
). Opposite orders (the written ones and the none written ones) could be : protect under-attack Constructors, protect under-attack miners, save a podded teammate or even "DOCK NOW!". I forgot the "I need turret now !" and few other emergency things ...
But yes, as stated in all those nicely written guides on Wiki, I do read the chat and I do read the map. And, unless ordered, I'll stick to Escort fully loaded with probes + Nan gun.
Oh, a question : is it regular that Commanders doesn't seem to research Advanced Scouts and higher and Nan level II or higher ? I understand it seems to be a lower priority over the Bombers and other weapons upgrade, but Advanced (and higher) Scout can carry more stuff (probes, missiles to unprobe/disturb any miners on the way) and are more likely to come back home.
Well ... I only played a few games in which we were only like 4 to 7 in team, that may be another cause too ...
See you later in game !
