Bollocks to that, the illegals tend to do jobs that chavs don't want to do and a significant number of chavs are unemployed by choice, the illegals don't get any welfare support, they do work and they buy goods. The chavs get welfare support, don't work and loot.

Have they considered a 'get a job, or starve in the dark' philosophy? Welfare programs don't do a good job at encouraging that.

I mean, I've seen people who hit rock bottom and pulled themselves out the worst possible situations, and now live quite decently, with little to no help from anyone else, so I don't feel sorry for the ones who choose to sit around and do nothing with their lives besides suck off taxpayer money.

These riots are really a good opportunity to rid the population of a lot of criminal scum, I hope they realize this and take full advantage of it.

this is the real problem of social discrimination (towards immigrants in this case): an excuse for the lazy $#@!ers to justify their uselessness.

it also happens around here.

MrC, I think I see where you're coming from but it doesn't seem to work like that, in London at least. There has been substantial unrest (actually politically motivated) in the past, severe bombing campaigns by the IRA and the city itself survived. Hell, the Germans bombed the crap out of the place and what was left standing got up in the morning and went to work like normal. It's that kind of a place.

I don't know if you foreign types are getting this, I'd guess not because riots make for better pictures, but there have been whole communities that have had riots, and been queueing up to be let into the area by police so that they could clean up. Adults, teens and kids with brooms sweeping up broken glass and debris. Good on 'em I say.

Different with the IRA and Jerries (couldn't resist) "they" did it to you. Whether "they" were right to do it aside.

A day or so of rock throwing and cab burning for *insert something here* is more common then many know or remember. I've read about the 85 London dust up and Paris just went through a riot too. The LA riot was a pretty big too.

IF things had kicked off again last night AND the cops had used real force to quell the rioting.... we'll there are a number of similarities between thenand now. The saving grace was, no one raised it to the next level i.e. water canoons and fully armed police or "Chavs" rushing about stabbing, bashing, and shooting people. It was about night two and the shrillness from the "good'uns" to "do something" started ratching up, and looting/destruction kept getting worse that it really began to worry me. Up to that point, given only what I can gather as it is happening, it was about mindless destruction and theft rather then pure rage. It still had the potential to still and after night three when the government said no more... welp the term powder keg comes to mind. This along with everyone pulling out a riot that occured over a generation ago here that made start thinking... a rare event indeed.

As for the clean up of the lose debris, yep we're getting the point that people don't like it and want to help. At the end of the day the buildings are still gone, and the looting still occured but the gesture is important in my mind. Matter of fact there was a similiar response from the average Joe during the rioting here including the most famous one of a local sports hero who right after a game, and still in uniform, drove into the worst of it and pleaded with them to stop. Also any number of organizations rose up Focus: Hope and New Detroit come to mind as a direct result of the rioting. Didn't make a difference here cause once you get branded with the label your $#@!ed.

In Detroit's case it was much worst from a violence viewpoint, thank goodness you didn't experience it, and assuming they are done being dumb asses you should be ok. Also there was a big culturual thing going on in the US and a balance of power shift locally starting to occur then as well. My guess is: keep your noses clean until after the Olympics next year and things will be fine. If the @#(!heads start it up again, or it just keeps going elsewhere *shrug* hey at least you have Detroit to point to as worse

edit:
A stray thought. There is enough of a lag given the timezones and the fact I'm on my way to work as your just about to get off that my responses are going to be "after the fact". The trouble or lackof it has occured in nutshell. By the time I sit down to read the forum again it will be about 2-3AM London time

three blokes died in birmingham last night, apparently after someone deliberately drove at them whilst they were protecting local shops

that area is a tinderbox, hopefully wiser heads will prevail (the local police arrested someone on suspicion of murder) but anyone who even tries to do owt to an asian owned business in that area is going to have to be heroically stupid, they will get the mother of all beatings

Yeah I don't know if that's linked with the rioting though, it might have been a separate attack, quite a lot of the EDL wankers in brum.
