Call for volunteers: merging Allegiance into FS2

QUOTE the main topic is still a call for volunteers and so far the people who clearly stated they want to participate are:[/quote]
Add me, I don't know any coding but I can do boring gruntwork like writing ship descriptions and documentation (i.e "player guides" for FS players).
And there's also my opinion, I can contribute that all day. ;)

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.

IRC: #FreeAllegiance and #Rollingthunder both on Quakenet. You may not find many (or any) code savvy people on there but there should be people able to answer basic questions about gameplay.

I'd be happy to help in any way I can. I have no useful skills though so I'm probably not much help.

Just reading through the thread, a good first step may be to list out what aspects of Allegiance we're trying to bring over to the FS2 platform. The term "Allegiance gameplay" is a little vague, and I think we're already seeing that people have different interpretations as to what that means.

For my part, my only real interest is translating "all of Allegiance, except the bugs." I'm obviously OK with an incremental process, since some features will be harder to implement than others, but that's my goal. As Orion said, this really ought to be Allegiance 2.

For the commanding part, I think this can be done through scripting. We already have a script up and running that enables a player to move and give orders to capital ships with a custom interface, while players in the same game that don't have the script play normally.

While this is not 100% what allegiance looks like, this is a good place to start IMHO, and this illustrates well what scripting in FS2 can do.

That is pretty cool, and does have some similarities to Alleg. The differences are that *commands* really only apply to AI constructors, carriers, and miners, and anyone can issue them. When applied to pilots, commands are more like suggestions :)

Could you imagine what Spidey would do with mandatory pilot commands? I would be shagging a goat within the first 15 minutes of the game. And then booted.

/OT: Matth, if you send a command to a pilot is the script engine rich enough to send a private chat to that player? That could be a good jump in point to start relaying commands to player's game clients (#GOTO(X, Y, Z) puts a mark on their map, gives a waypoint, etc.))

Well, I think scripts can print messages on the HUD on a per-player basis. And creating waypoints should be doable too. Shouldn't require any engine change.

What we need here is a good LUA scripter though. Many things can be done just with LUA, but that's a beast I never approached myself.

ok let's get this thing started then.

1st step: where do we discuss and plan things ? Matt, since you'll be the main contributor, it's your call.
We can stay here and ask for a sub-forum or move to a HLP sub-forum (if you have connections there) or move to a the 3rd, neutral place (any "project hosting site" will do I guess). Whatever you choose, I guess having a sub-forum here would be a good thing to keep the Allegiance community posted about that project.

Jucko, Raveen, since you're both ZL, can you make this happen quickly ? a 'FreeSpace Zone' (or whatever name you want) subforum with Matt as moderator. ( ideally in FreeAllegiance Forums > Community Zones > Freespace Zone then from here we can later create more subforums )

once we have our 'place', we'll need to build a sticky with 'who can do what' and get things moving. We will split the concerns and gameplay elements of this topic into their own thread.

Meanwhile I'll add that anyone from Allegiance wishing to participate should install FS2 and start getting used to it (learn the basics at least).

Well, I think this is a good idea... Some people suggests that we should improve our own Allegiance but it looks like we are not able to develop anything in shorter than Two Weeks ™ , so it is best to do something than doing nothing and whining.

I think I can be of use, I have some programming skills, but I can just try to do anything.

I'll put in an admin request for a forum. Wouldn't it be best to have it as a subforum of the dev zone? It is development after all (I'm just thinking about keeping things tidy at the top level at least).

Sadly ZL's (not that I strictly am one any more) can't make subforum's so it depends on TE or TB to get it done. May be a few days just FYI depending on how busy they are in RL.
