I don't think it makes sense to define "true love" as being possible only with one other person in the world. In fact I think that's pretty ludicrous.
That does not mean that true love does not exist, however.
Love at first sight?

If you can find the time
To give your love to me
I will wait for you
If that's all you need
If you can find the time
If ever you're free
Just drop me a line
And tell me where you'll be
I'll be right here
If you can find the time
Just be sincere
If you can find the time
I'll wait for you
But if you can't find the time
Then cut me loose
Cause I don't have the time
And I don't have the patience
What do you take me for?
Why am I still waiting?
Cause while you decide.
I'm $#@!ing suffocating.
Cause if you can't find the time
My bleeding heart won't make it x2
If you can find the time
To give your love to me
Just drop me a line
And tell me where you'll be
I'll be right here
If you can find the time
Just be sincere

For example I would say that marriage can be a wonderful thing and MrC says there is no such thing as true love/bonding for life. That's at least partly because I'm happily married & he's divorced.
In my experience, love/lust initiates the wheels that may lead to marriage, but it is a whole different dynamic (that includes love, but not run by it) that keeps it going as you would know. But that's a different discussion.
Interesting that our national station Triple J are running Love month at the moment.

I have never thought that true love didn't exist or isn't possibleGandalf2 wrote:QUOTE (Gandalf2 @ Jul 19 2011, 06:28 AM) I don't think you can form a lifelong bond in a brief moment.

Maybe some people who do say they felt love at first sight do end up staying together but I'd guess a lot more say they don't. You need to really know someone well & share experiences in order to have a lieftime bond.
True love is to death do you part kind of thing by the very nature of it. It persists even if for some life circumstance, including death, you never see each other again. It is as rare as rare can be, in my book. The kid in Slumdog Millionaire was showing the beginnings of true love. but we have to wait both their entire lives to watch and see if it really was true love. True love never dies in a cliche filled nutshell... well at least until you both do.
As for not believing that people bond for life I'd be an imbecile if I didn't think it occured considering it is all around me.
Mating for life doesn't require one to even like the other let alone one has found true love. Being married is a state one can be in and never, ever experience a single pange of love for the other. I hope you're worldly enough to know that this happens all the time, all over the planet.
I think what you were really shooting for in your ying yang commentary using me and you in the roles was:
I have a jaded view of marriage, skewed to a male's perspective, given my life experiences
You have a rose colored view of marriage, skewed to your religon's perspective, given your life experiences
However we both appear to agree "love at first sight" is not a valid concept
Did I get it right?
Probably not since it is pretty damn difficult to sum a person's world view, especially if you know them only from a forum persona, in only a few sentences.

Well, I still beleive in true love and in that there are as different ways of feeling love as persons on Earth...
But if the Swiss girl I was having a beer with yesterday night hadn't split to her place my beleifs would be a bit tattered right now...
Guess she saw the predator eyes for just a sec...
And I'm still thanking her... I am such a pervert... and "my" girl enjoying the sun and the beach like 400 km's away...
Well, I'm pure and nice and still with my cape... I'm glad of it

There is this moderately well known 16th Century story that would have you think that marriage for love was meant to end in tragedy.MrChaos wrote:QUOTE (MrChaos @ Jul 13 2011, 02:04 AM) Sorry kiddies, marriage for love is a mostly western society 19thish/20th century experiment that is an abject failure.
Some guy named Spear shaking, or something, wrote it.
