Fiction wise a favourite for me: "Black Easter" (James Blish?) Don't do mainstream or books that lead to mental constipation through intellectual indigestion along the way (James Joyce, for instance)

Good old Space opera: The Witches of Karres, James H. Schmitz

The "Bolo" series of military fiction, Keith Laumer.

As a themed compendium "From Here to Infinity" editor Martin Harry Greenberg. (Out of print, unfortunately. The cat gave birth on my copy)
