Non-Protip:

If you do use the reticule, the "The Dot".

It's tiny, out of the way, and basically does nothing, but you can still have the occasional red and green flash to reminisce about Christmas or...Italy.

I've used the dot for a long time, and watch my bullets, not the reticule.

It's still difficult to hit a sideways moving target, though. Even more difficult to make all your shots count.
