icons missing in game

i've noticed that i can no longer see the icons for some ships and probes while in game. it seems that the icon that appears next to the ship or probe is not being displayed, this problem affects me in command view and in flight mode. in command mode i can see the colored trail left by the ship and the vertical line that attaches it to the grid but not the icon of the ship itself. and in the flight view i only see the textured ship and its tail. this doesn't happen for all ships and seems to affect ships and probes of the same team im on.

does anyone know how to fix this or if it is some option i have accidentally selected.

please help
