I'm now my own own stumbling blocker... The installer returned from oblivion with some new features:

Allow to run Allegiance without administrator rightsFixing ACL of NTFS directoryFixing ACL of registry settingsVista/Win7: Adding ASGSClient/ASGSUpdate to application compatibility list (no more warning of running unsigned 3rd party application)Includes DirectX webinstaller (runs only if outdated DirectX is detected)Includes check of .net framework (downloads and installs .net framework 2.0 if not found)Includes Visual C++ 2008 runtime DLLs (this needs more testing, maybe the current method needs to be replaced)Requires Windows XP SP2 or better (doesn't run on Windows 2000 and Win9x)If Windows Firewall is used, it will add exceptionsReadme: Link to WikiStartmenu contains now link to community home, learning guide, tech support and create a new account (ASGS)Setup will ask the user to create a new ASGS accountIncluding latest AU files (CC_10)BETA setup (which doesn't overwrite Allegiance.exe)

Download link:

This needs more testing, before it's suggested to replace the current installer.

Can we also get a link to mesial's site for hi-res stuff once the installer has finished?

TBH I think the default installer should be the hi-res stuff with a "small install" option for people who wish to be fussy (fussy people will look too)

edit: and :iluv: the installer :)

We'd need to do some tweaking of the high-res stuff and organize a "recommended" pack (and get people to agree what should go in). Mesial's site is getting outdated in his absence. It's missing some rather good content, like SpaceJunk's GT base textures. Some tweaks to the rock pack to make them less dark and identical looking are missing as well. Basically anything that's been done in the last year or two isn't there.

There's also a lot of med-high res content from the MS art CD's that would be an excellent candidate for an improved default installer. Quia put together a pack, but I think there were issues with a few of the textures. Maybe after the semester is over I'll look into tidying it up.

Tbh we really need some repository on the FAO site for all the artwork/mods because it's a real chore finding the mods and mesial's site is outdated but still has a better collection then anything else.

If we could get one like it on FAO it would be great, just a question of how to host the files, maybe installer mirrors would mirror mods as well?

Use the wiki? I don't know if you'd want it to do the file hosting, but you could certainly at least create pages with links to an offsite host. I agree getting the installer mirrors to mirror mod material would be fantastic.

How about using something like code.google.com to host the file packs? That would give the bandwidth and version control for the large file archives. I haven't worked with that particular site before, but this is an open shared source effort after all.
