I use Avast and it has never been a problem when playing Allegiance.

Mine is on an old computer running XP with auto updates engaged. It runs fine, I just remember that the main updates are around 6 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Most third party software firewalls have a problem with the way DirectPlay8 opens ports at NAT.

Avast, no fixing problems since 2007:

I think if you install avast without that web shield stuff you're fine

I've been using avast for a while and haven't had any issues
