Raveen wrote:QUOTE (Raveen @ Sep 15 2010, 03:38 PM) Did you even read Bard's post? (hint: you didn't).
Yes, here is a summary of what Bard has said:

In this post:

I have a lot of code review to do, will take some time. <-- absolutely understandable, I support this

In the News Thread:

Please waste your time using ASGS to try to navigate this mess I have been left with to maybe test some out of date code that I may be ripping out anyway. <-- I do not support this.

Point is, I want you guys to want to test this when the time comes, not be so frustrated that you neglect the entire process when we are actually ready.

We have updated in the last 5 weeks and I agree that we should get our house in order before we invite everyone to come try it out though. Now that we are working with one Beta method (ASGS) that should be working flawlessly before we put up another beta Wed post.

I did not imply WE are updating 7 times a day, but bard is acting like this is standard practice for a game in beta, and its not, simply not.

Bard wrote:QUOTE (Bard @ Sep 15 2010, 08:35 PM) I didn't break beta. It was largely broken early on by the timed cutoff of the build server so that I could upload files for ASGS users in Beta Mode because that often led to bugged versions being the "existing" one due to the aforementioned poor coding processes (I wanted a saturday cutoff so patches could be implemented, Imago wanted wednesday morning US time, we compromised at noon on tuesday which, as you can tell, still proved FAR too short a time period) and later by Imago's complete abandonment of his undocumented changes to the beta server (some of which involved reviving exe files that were deprecated YEARS AGO, not to mention linking several perl sripts to both service restarts and registry keys that ran process restarts automatically due to code commits, making them exceedingly difficult to hunt down and turn off).
Strange, I don't know what bugged versions you were talking about. The ones provided by Imago were fine, only the ones on ASGS were broken. Most of the time, ASGS autoupdate was missing critical files.

Imago created a faster way to test stuff by using Beta autoupdate - I think this was a great idea. I've seen it in action, how it led to builds getting tested immediately. It allowed the developers to work much, much closer with the testers. Yes maybe it's a misnomer (being more Alpha than Beta), but I think Imago's whole setup was a great productivity boost and is the major reason why R6 brings more changes than any previous release.

Yes it broke ASGS autoupdate, but that only resulted a lot of shouting about which way Beta should be tested (Imago wanted everyone to install Beta separately; Bard wanted everyone to use ASGS).
Only a few weeks later, pkk figured out how to make everyone happy. Note the post date: Aug 31 2010, 06:17 PM
It involves changes on both sides: in Imago's Beta deployment code and on the ASGS admin side.
Imago committed the code changes in revision 989 on Sep 1st, 01:51 AM.
On the other hand, Bard still hasn't fixed the ASGS admin side and still is directing people to a broken Beta.

pkk has mentioned the fix as response to every single news post, but Bard just ignored him. (at least that's how I remember it - Bard deleted all old posts)
ASGS Beta remains broken, and Bard just weekly tells people to waste their time trying the same old broken build.

Psst, don't say that so loud. Every time Imago posted something about this (people should simply use his installer to access beta), Bard deleted those posts.
ASGS is the one true method to get to the official broken FAO beta.

Use that installer only if you want the non-broken AZ beta.

Edit: oh, and for those people who aren't up-to-date with the dev news: yes, really there are two different versions of alleg now. Imago's last commit to FAO is from the 5th September, all his changes since then are in the AZ version only. Other bugfixes courtesy of Turkey and UncleBuck also are AZ only. Only Xynth was so nice to commit his changes to both versions.

Can we get the 2 camps together and reconcile differences for the sake of the game and not splitting the community?

The community isn't split (yet?)

But the trac server was taken down from trac.alleg.net and apparently brought back up at trac.allegiancezone.com.

As I understand it, bard is getting a backup of trac up on our own SVN server so that it doesn't leave our community in the event someone decides to "take their ball and go home."

EDIT: For those curious, this was the main reason behind the hesitance that was experienced when trac was being brought online on a different server from our SVN server. There was no guarantee that it would stay with the community in the foreseeable future. As it turned out, those concerns were legitimate.
