The amount of newbs and voobs is overwhelming the number of decent players and vets. Current situation is an effect caused by an overflow of newbs a few years ago.Adept wrote:QUOTE (Adept @ Jul 28 2010, 06:43 PM) At the risk of sounding denser than usual... what overflow of newbs? There's precious few of them. As I write this the leaderboar is showing 456 as the number of people who've played Allegiance in the last 7 days.
I wish we had an influx of newbs.
(Yes, I am stating that voobs are DISTINCT AND SEPARATE from decent players. Stop using it as a badge of honour.)

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.
Omicron Hive is the first new faction we've had in a very long time, long enough for people to get bored and go away. I'm sorry to say it, but it's true. The attention span of today's gamer is short and we don't exactly have the resources of Blizzard.Jimen wrote:QUOTE (Jimen @ Jul 28 2010, 04:39 AM) Free games live entirely on the hardcore players who work to improve them, not the newbies who play for a couple months then drift away. It certainly wasn't the noobs who've been releasing "new content and updates" consistently over the last couple of years. Considering that Omicron Hive came out only a couple of months ago and the R6 beta is running at full steam every week, it's pretty clear that you've got no idea what you're talking about and should probably get out.
And wow, just because in the 5 minutes you've been here things have been happening, clearly this has been what's happening since the dawn of time. It's pretty clear you need to shut the hell up once in a while and let other people talk, even if they're wrong, instead of just telling them to get out. Talk about driving people away.

So... the problem is we have too many new people? To make the game better we should have fewer people joining it? We should cut back on marketing perhaps? Or just ban new sign-ups altogether?

Adept, we have TONS of newbies every day. They don't make it on the leaderboard for long (if at all) since they don't stay. My script isn't working right, but I am planning on writing something that tracks "online players" and their rank and counting newbies. I'd love to map that against the leaderboard for # of hours played when I can and then we'll have some more data . .but if you remember, MrC and Redlion did some stats using fwiffo's data and we have lots of new players, they just never stay.
Edited for proper credit to Redlion (my bad dude) and thanks MrC.

Ssssh
I think the best way to keep newbies is to ADD MOAR TROMBE!
(Or at least some epic song in the background)
On a more serious note. Is there a way to send the newbies somewhere OTHER than the main where they won't get frustrated that EVERYTHING is happening and they can't do anything? Perhaps add insta-podkill for anyone with a rank lower than 5 as well? Newbies need more actually playing time and less "WTF IS GOING ON!" time if you want to keep em.
