Cookie Monster wrote:QUOTE (Cookie Monster @ Jul 27 2010, 10:06 PM) I disagree. Most games are short lived and have transient player bases, either that or they continually release new content and updates to keep the masses occupied.

Allegiance benefits from neither of these and relies on 2 big things: the gameplay and the community.
Free games live entirely on the hardcore players who work to improve them, not the newbies who play for a couple months then drift away. It certainly wasn't the noobs who've been releasing "new content and updates" consistently over the last couple of years. Considering that Omicron Hive came out only a couple of months ago and the R6 beta is running at full steam every week, it's pretty clear that you've got no idea what you're talking about and should probably get out.

QUOTE I would suspect that very few vets are actually driven away by the community (there are exceptional cases, of course), because let's be honest, once you have invested all this time into integrating yourself into the game and the community you generally stick with it.[/quote]
There's vets in this very thread who've indicated that they're on their way out precisely BECAUSE even though they've invested all that time into trying to improve the game, it's all come to nothing because the idiots overflowing in this community always render all that effort moot.

I would require more than 1 set of hands to count the number of vets who quit this game, or play very rarely because the actions of the community, and the excessive stacking.

Certain people are encouraged to be trolls in this community, by the community.

Sign reads:

 Free Online Game looking for more players; goto http://freeallegiance.org

Download the game and sign up!
(It leads people to believe they can jump right into the game, if you look at the homepage.)

Game Name: Allegiance
Company: Originally created by Microsoft.
Game Age: ~10 years old
Genre: Futuristic Space Flying Game: Something between a MMOFPS and a MMORTS

Once downloaded, we the community recommend you fly the training missions before joining internet play.
(who ever reads the freaking manual when you 1st install/play a game? seriously)
(What are they going to learn is those training missions that they will remember in a PUG? maybe hitting insert, if your lucky.)
(What do the training missions even teach? Nanite? no. Bombing? no. Capture? no. How to find an Aleph? no.)

Once those training missions are done, join us!

You have a few options readily available to you!

A) Join us in the Main game chat-room, where people are trying to decide on how to get a game going.
B) Join us in the Main game where you will probably join the losing (stacked against) team.
C) You even have the option of going to a Newbie only server where you can sit alone for hours at a time!

Please be aware of the steep learning curve you will have to endure as well as being ignored most of the time while flying, except when you make for an easy target to shoot at for the opposing team(s).

When your spaceship does explode because someone shot you, you DON'T die! You need to go back to base which can take up to 5 minutes to get back in the action!
(Anyone have a good book?)
(pod flying should read in big bold red letters, GET YOU ARSE BACK TO BASE, HIT THE B KEY THEN THE P KEY.)

We understand that the game is complex and overwhelming to new people, so we have dedicated players just for you!
Most of them will not be online though, if at all.

(How can the newbies find the @help or @alleg if they have NO idea how to?)

Feel free to ask questions during game chat! If we're not too busy dog-fighting we will be happy to answer you.
(You don't mind obnoxious people do you?)

If you see someone typing in bold chat, that's the team commander and (pseudo)leader.
(If vets dog out commanders in team chats and ignore orders, won't that trickle down to the newbies?)

We also have a great skill system too! You start off as a 0, letting everyone know how much of a newbie you are!
You stay a newbie until you hit rank (5).

(Then you are expected to know to stop flying circles and how to nan!)
(You don't mind obnoxious people do you?)
(Oh, we never told you the commander can boot you now as a (5) for not following orders or being podded by UberVet?)

When you aren't flying in allegiance, we recommend using the wiki and the forums to help you on your way to becoming a better pilot!
(How many hundreds of hours are needed to read all the material?)

think of the huge online world of allegiance from a newbie perspective guys!

Also, what do you have in lines of player retention?

I quit allegiance once under a different callsign as a (6) or something for over 6 months. I just made OmniWraith my REAL callsign when I came back not that long ago.

The reason I quit was because I was looking more for a RTS (hence me loving to command) and not being able to command without all the flames to follow as a newbie commander.

But even still more upsetting was trying to learn how to fly successful missions. nanning, tp2, bombing etc. and the negativity to follow my self frustration of being podded. Ya, I'm a newbie, I got podded. But sheesh guys... lay off the verbal whipping. I feel bad enough looking at the "YOU ARE IN A POD" for 3-4 minutes.

Here's another set of hands, let's count the vets I know, without a doubt, ...
... left due to overflow of newbs - Arkof
... is leaving due to overflow of newbs - juckto

Both players have invested a lot of time and effort into improving the game.

Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.

At the risk of sounding denser than usual... what overflow of newbs? There's precious few of them. As I write this the leaderboar is showing 456 as the number of people who've played Allegiance in the last 7 days.

I wish we had an influx of newbs.

I remain unconvinced that you are not, in fact, the same person.
