One of the easiest ways to fix gameplay imo is geting more people on Mumble/TS. Would there be a way to connect to TS through ASGS. I would assume no. Also I think maybe having a list of who is already on TS/Mumble on the forums could be helpful. "Hey Playerawesome is on TS, I would like to join TS and play with him"

Youngmoose wrote:QUOTE (Youngmoose @ Jul 20 2010, 04:37 PM) The main problem is the unbalanced games. A balanced game will allow a newbie access to tech they can learn the game with, a better grasp on development, situational awareness, more aspects of the game (dogfighting, miner d, nanning etc..) and a few safe sectors in which they can fly without getting instantly podded.

Inversely, an unbalanced and stacked game will give newbies the opportunity to launch in 1-2 sectors, sometimes to a camped base, and get quickly podded. Hardly a fun situation.

While this is true, the leader board has been in steady decline over the past 3 years. When I joined, it was over 2000, it is now 450 ish. Something really needs to be done.
The entire thread should have stopped with this post. Please lock this as everything else is just bla bla bla.

Mumble has means to query and return the list of players. If you used your main nic in mumble, it is possible that we could have a "tag" inside alleg that would show that you were on the service. If you didn't want to show up, just don't use your main nic OR we couild have an opt-out tic box somewhere.

The solution: Let people play on newbie servers until rank 7 or 8 or whatever it was years ago, again.

Prioritize new players having fun over cramming detailed knowledge of the game into them as soon as possible. The phrase "get off the newbie servers as quickly as you possibly can so you can play real games!" should never be uttered anywhere in the Alleg documentation.

Let new players do stupid things on their newbie servers -- encourage it, even -- and once they get hooked, they'll want to learn more about how to play in "real" games all on their own.

After Cadet program I think the best way for a newbie to learn is to get on TS/Mumble and ask people for help. This will be easier if more people are on TS/Mumble. I understand that not everone can join those programs for various reasons. The majority of us can we just choose not to because not very many other people are not on so what is the point.

Newbies running around having capship wars may teach them to a point then they will get bored and leave when the real game is not as fun intially.

TS/Mumble and all that is 99% useless for new people. The vast majority do not use these services.

It is yet another hoop.

However for regular game play I think I'll check out mumble, TS never worked on my machine well anyway.

No. I do not agree. It is far more likely they will have capship wars and have fun and thus won't quit the game in their first day or two of playing. Then after a bit of this they will get bored of silly pointless capship wars, and, since they're already "hooked," will want to know what the rest of the game is like.

Is the goal here to teach newbies as quickly as possible? Because I thought the thread was about how to get newbies to play this game and not quit. These are two distinct goals, and are not necessarily complementary. The best way to get newbies to stay is NOT to throw them into a real game as soon as possible where they spend half the time in a pod and the rest of the time getting yelled at to "d op con low" when they don't know what any of it means.

The way to get more players to stay is NOT to focus on making them as good as possible as quickly as possible. It is to let them have fun. Not everyone who just started trying the game will be interested in signing up for a school where they have to study the game right away. That's pretty intimidating, and far too big an investment of time to ask of most people who haven't even had time to decide whether they like the game or not. Let them have fun first, and they'll be more likely to stick with the game long enough to discover that it is worth investing time into.

Stop confusing the goal of getting more people to play with the goal of getting every noob up to squad game level in the least time possible. TS? Mumble? Try reviving the newbie servers instead, and maybe you'll see results.
