They used to be a minority.
Actually when i started playing there was a war of Carebears (ACE) vs Stackers (XT), there were a ton of douchebags back then, and a lot of newbie players.
The carebears won the battle... but the newbie count dropped off anyways.
Just sayin...

We could create an ASGS poll that pops on the second or third login, asking what their least favorite thing about the game is. That's not particularly scientific, and it won't answer the question directly, but it's something.cashto wrote:QUOTE (cashto @ Jul 20 2010, 06:13 PM) How do you suppose we gather this data?

There is no abuse of noobplayers by vets. It is just not true that the vets bully the noobs until they leave. We also don't need any new rules, that make the game less enjoyable for the vet players. We already put a lot of effort into making the noobs feel welcome. We provide several trainingprograms and nearly every good player takes his/her time ingame to answer questions and even to mentor new players by constantly pming and explaining every babystep to them.Vortrog wrote:QUOTE (Vortrog @ Jul 21 2010, 01:02 AM) If anyone can add some value to a proposal it would be you Lingus, so if nothing else, shoot down the proposals in a wall of text please so they can be enhanced or scrapped.
It's simply, that not every new guy likes the game as much as we Alleg-addicts do. Just think about how many online-games you tried out in the last years and how many of them you keep playing on a regular basis. So the only thing that helps in this issue is to get a higher influx of new players.
The other problem, that is addressed here is, that many people are not happy about the current state of PUGs. The main problem is, that there is a really big gap between the really good vets and the average voob. Now blaming the good vets of being good and dominating the game will bring us nowhere. They won't start to suck, just to reach a homogeneous skilllevel within the comunity. You can't reverse what they learned in several years of playing Allegiance. So the only way to improve this is to encourage and help people to overcome their voobishness. Of course this effort can only be crowned with success, if the voobs themselves actually want to improve and put some effort into it.
As long as people are looking for a challenge rather than a one sided whore fest things are great. I Allegskill helped a lot, making the badly stacked games more obvious and the stack-your-way-to-the-top-of-the-leaderboard pasttime a bit more challenging.
Skilled players are an asset, not a problem. I do agree with you l1ngus. A bit of tolerance towards lesser mortals would be nice though. Nothing is achieved by mocking the people who make mistakes. Even if they keep on making them. Everybody is not in the same league, and never will be. To the absolute top players the hoi polloi will seem slow and stupid, and this won't change.
Just relax a little in the PuGs, and take the occasional fumble as comedy rather as a cause for road rage. PuGs will not turn into SGs no matter what. I realise My 3 year run is a far cry from the decade of some of you, but so far I'm enjoying PuGs, and I try to put in several every week... even if sometimes it's from a sense of duty rather than a burning passion. Keeping Allegiance alive and well is important to me. Every hobby will occasionally suck, but I at least find something enjoyable in all but the very worst games... and there is always #resign or #mutiny for those.

There is a big problem with this: Those dominating vets spend 10+ hours playing Alleg EACH day. They are always on the online list and I don't see how someone who plays only 2-3 pugs per week can show improvement compared to them.
The serious vets who are always on keep dominating and pugs mostly revolve around them (top comms and game changers). You can't change that by simply telling voobs to improve, some lack the time for it, some lack the drive for it. Thus, pugs will always stay somewhat unbalanced.
Same goes for squadgames - these serious vets tend to migrate to the top squads (SysX, XT, RT, PK) which makes the league predictable and thus boring - even for those who tend to win. Telling lesser squad members to "keep practicing and improving so one day you might be able to beat us" won't do much good as - again - no one can counterbalance the ungodly amount of time the top pilots spend/spent in the comm seat or cockpit. The lesser squads have been struggling with this problem for a long long time as the top squads slowly syphoned away the vets.

I know the point you're trying to make but a lower ranked squad can make it to the top. It takes hard work from all involved but if we look at the four squads you mention, 3 have been lower ranked squads in the last few years for one reason or another.Hermit wrote:QUOTE (Hermit @ Jul 21 2010, 08:13 AM) Same goes for squadgames - these serious vets tend to migrate to the top squads (SysX, XT, RT, PK) which makes the league predictable and thus boring - even for those who tend to win. RT - Newbie squad grew to mid ranked grew to top flight
SysX - Exploded and rebuilt by Cable and then Spidey to become the top squad in Allegiance
XT - Lost a lot of decent players and dropped into the lower half of the rankings, made a comeback this year.
Personally I think we have a chicken and egg situation. We have people who have played for a decade+ and we have people who have played for a day. Their skill levels are never going to be even. The ideal would be to separate these groups so that newer folks play with other newer folks whilst the vets play mostly with vets. Everyone's happy and we retain more of both groups.
But we can't do that with the community so small. We should have taken the opportunity when the main game was 50+ in size every day. Now we'd be doing far more harm than good.
To many whiners dont realy encourage players to command, and the fact that the community only want to play on one server at a time, dont exactly makes games start faster.
So if you want kill a game! Keep the "whine of the hour" longer and longer between games.
The whole Hippy @#(! with having one server for all ranks is so weak, if you dont introduce a multiple challenges to a game, players leave.
But hey, if you wanna keep growing old and fear new stuff.. i guess "no change city" is a good place to die.

In the last 6-8 month the leaderboard have dropped from 550-600 to 450 a week.BlackViper wrote:QUOTE (BlackViper @ Jul 21 2010, 01:54 AM) Quoted for accuracy. It has always been this way in the summer.
