Lori, if you made pictures like that for all the environments, I'd bow down and worship you, and find the time to play Allegiance again to oggle them.

IIRC, the UV map for all the environments Allegiance uses are mapped to use the large rectangular area on two half-spheres, and the narrow section on the right side is a band that joins the two sides of the sphere... The originals have a big nebulous image on the hemispheres, and a vague galactic disk haze in the band. I don't think any of the new ones that Adaven and I made use that space, I remember it being a pain in the ass to get it to look right. :P

Well these 3 don't compete w/ Lori's, but I figure I'd try to keep things simple since I'm still pretty newbish at photoshop =P They're just reorganizations of the 3 wallpapers I've made over the past week. None of them are morphed to fit into Alleg in any way, nor do I know if they will morph correctly... just square 2048^2 images. I have .bmp/.psd versions of them of course. Doesn't matter if they are unusable, took all of an hour to throw them together =P

Yeah, Quia's description of the current texture coordinates is correct, which is why I suggested that we could remap it to something easier to understand.

fantastic Lori. You might try a generic file hosting service (or even make a googlesite) instead of imageshack or other image only hosting services.

Those look really good Bacon. Another idea is that some of these could be used as nebplnts instead of environments (which require no morphing at all), which could replace some of the less awesome ones in the current high-res pack.

You need to stretch/squash some parts of the paper and fuse some parts of the edges together - like the whole top edge of the paper would have to get squashed into a single point.
i know how uv mapping works :) im just wondering why only like 70% of the UV space is used.

well

I got an image from google, (the first one you get when you type in "clouds")
and fooled around with it, adding lens flares and stuff till it looks like that :)

100% is used, actually, its just weird (image courtesy Quia):

Green Octagons are undeformed top/down view. Black lines are deformed into UV space. The "blank" rectangle on the right isn't really blank, its actually the entire "equator" region of the sphere, the individual poly lines just aren't shown. some of the MS environments use a top to bottom line of subtle color in the right rectangle to represent the galactic disk.

Bacon, if you could get me .psd's I'll try to see if I can get these in game. I suspect instead of background environments that the 2 planet images will end as nebplanets ( posters ). If I don't get the distortion correction 100% right, it'll be really noticeable since everyone knows a planet is supposed to be round. Which is fine, we need new ones of those too. The Nebula though should be much more tolerant for use as a background.
