When R5 is released, many of you (I'd bet about 95% of our community) will run into an error message saying the D3DX9_42.dll file is not found.

To resolve this error message, simply download the latest DirectX files from Microsoft and install it.
Be sure to select the appropriate language for your computer or you could run into problems.

For those of you who want to get ahead of the game, feel free to go download and install this update now even though R5 hasn't been released yet.

As a quick update about the R5 deployment, a few problems have been identified that would have prevented gameservers from going online after updating. Cort and his team are working to resolve the issue now. It seems likely that R5 will roll out this week afterall, hopefully tomorrow as originally planned. Don't worry if it's a bit late though - we'd rather do it right than do it quick ;)

We're not worthy, we're not worthy!

I decided to relive the days gone by in my new blog.

Did you have to use the August 09 build of DirectX? Most users don't even realize there are multiple versions of DirectX 9.0c.

Sure, any regular Alleg player will read the news; but I guess you'll lose some newbie players.

I hope the new setup will automatically install the correct DirectX version or at least show a more understandable error message - otherwise 95% of potential new players will ignore this game because "it doesn't work".

Yes and in this case it is really stupid to call something 9.0, a, b, c and then just stop counting. WTH?
Anyway, I agree though, the error message could have used some work. I had a similar message for my brand new Win7...

That's why we post this in here, because we use the latest version. It doesn't matter if you got latest DirectX 10 or 11, you need to run that webinstaller to get latest directx 9 dlls to run this game.

The DirectX Redistributable can be cut down to ~20MB and included with the games' installer....

indeed, when me, fuzz and imago were trying to get it working out of the box on linux we had a directx redist installer built-in. you only need to copy some files to the right place. (the license lets you do that, the only requirement was that you include 2 specific files iirc).
