Just to point out that my idea does let you only buy the ships you want (you just get some other stuff thrown in like weapons to put on them), It did adjust the costs and armour of the capships
The offense / defence idea was Xeretov's alteration to my idea, mine was grouping them by class size (essentially function), and having them upgradeable, but having their associated weapons get upgraded with them.
lt class - corvs for killing small stuff
med class - dests and devs, for long range killing small stuff andd killing caps respectivly
hvy class - frig->cruiser->battle cruiser+battle ship for base killing
support - everything else (ass ship, freighter piloted carrier, support ship)
