Out of curiosity, just how difficult would it be to integrate some kind of voice chat into allegiance?

Step 1:

Install TeamSpeak

Step 2:

Log in at ts.alleg.net

Complete.

The main problem with TeamSpeak is that it's almost never used in Pick-Up Games. If there were some way to integrate something like it, perhaps it would get used more. Of course, it'd probably be an awful lot of work, and you can always just blame the laziness of pick-up game players instead... :P

Another problem with TeamSpeak is that I can never tell who is talking. TeamSpeak Overlay is supposed to exist to solve this, but it noticeably slows down Allegiance. I know it's not "supposed" to, in theory, but alas, it does, and so I cannot really use it without making the whole game less fun (and noticeably harder).

An integrated Team-Speak-Like thing could potentially solve both problems. Although I'm sure it will never, ever happen since the volunteer devs have a ton of stuff to be working on that is more urgent, and since this would probably be quite complicated... :P

It's incredibly low priority.

And, before anyone even mentions it, don't suggest using whatever code packages for something like Vent, Teamspeak, or whatever and just integrate it that way. The code release for Alleg is pretty clear in the fact that alleg is NOT a real open-source project, and EVERY modification made to the code then belongs to microsoft. So if we put a TS SDK into Alleg, then I'm almost certain we'd be violating Teamspeak's terms of use for it - Plus, Teamspeak wouldn't be very happy since their code would, technically, then belong to MS.

We'd basically have to code it from the ground up, which is no easy task. It's also why it's pretty low priority

This idea is a recurring theme. I first looked into it four-odd years ago. Nothing much has changed since then, and the factors Andon mentioned apply today as much as they did in the past.

The other issue is policing the content of an integrated voice chat system: in alleg there's a swear filter, on TS we don't try to police content because it'[d be annoying to the vast majority of players and pretty much impossible for the @Allegs. And yet there would be a risk of getting sued if an impressionable 13 year old (or more likely their mother) hears the word $#@!.

It'd obviously be possible to turn the system off, should one ever appear.
