Forgive the intrusion, great work on keeping Allegiance alive!
I am a new developer to Allegiance. I have a questions to the development community about ASGS. I understand that this is closed source for good reason, but if I wanted to setup a completly seperate instance of this, is this possible? If I have my own server hardware, and want to utilize my own version of the client, my own mod, can this be done while still staying with ouit violating the ASGS closed source situation?
Forgive me if I havent read enough,
Thank you.

Yes. You simply don't run ASGS on your client and block asgs.alleg.net from your server and/or lobby.

These bugs haven't been fixed yet because don't have any developers interested in fixing them up. --Tigereye

I think you need to check the ToS for Allegiance. Getting an alternative lobby with alternative servers up for alternative clients does/may/might go against the FreeAllegiance ToS, which would disallow you from using the current code base for such a purpose. Nothing but the MS EULA stops you from going back to stone age and download MS 1.25 source from Microsoft itself.Rex Whitten wrote:QUOTE (Rex Whitten @ Jul 19 2009, 01:07 AM) If I wanted to setup a completly seperate instance of this, is this possible? Anyway, I think the cause for this thraed is a deep misconception about ASGS, rather than an attempt at building alternatives to ASGS.

Correct, I dont suggest a re-building of it, merely a different instance of it, running on a different server. But if this goes against a ToS for FAZ, i might just have to use the MS code base, and code some replacement.Badp wrote:QUOTE (Badp @ Jul 18 2009, 07:26 PM) Anyway, I think the cause for this thraed is a deep misconception about ASGS, rather than an attempt at building alternatives to ASGS.![]()

when you said "this" i figured you meant Allegiance.

What BadP says is the case. In order to run your own "instance" of Allegiance, ASGS is not needed. You can build your own client & server and host them anywhere you'd like. ASGS is merely our tool for authenticating players within the community. You won't be able to get your hands on ASGS... we don't have the source and the author is unreachable

That said, If you are interested in building a security system, we are interested in doing a new one, but at the moment development efforts are rather low

Just to 'clarify' (I hope) the modifications/improvements made to the allegiance code base by this community are public, you can find info on how to get to it and build it in the wiki section.
You can run your own lobby, server, and client.
ASGS is a separate executable (and database) that provides a level of hacking/cheating protection and restricted access to the lobby.
