Usually though, "skill" is used to covertly mean "match the game exactly to my level of competence." Anyone who is at all worse than me should fail utterly (and humorously!) and anyone better is clearly too caught up in the game and their opinions shouldn't count.

i think we encountered a bug earlier today in a bios adv exp/sup vs belt adv sup. bios had hvy ints but loses exp so they go sup instead, having stolen ab3. using the stolen ab3 tech, bios sends 2 bbrs to force bomb belter sup 2k from aleph and succeed. belts in turn, tp2 bios sup and it dies. new bios sup is rebuilt at home... but no ab3... not even ab2.
ab3 should come back w/ the 2nd sup right? someone was trying to convince me that we had to buy ab2 in order to see ab3 light up...

Are you saying you didn't have ab3 or that you just couldn't see it on f5?
Yes you have to have ab2 researched to see ab3, same with dis2 and galvs in that you can steal galvs but if you don't have dis2 it won't show in the research pane. If you had stolen ab2 as well then you would have been able to see ab3 (if you were not bios then you would also need an adv techbase to see ab3)
EDIT: Clarification - you can use stolen tech but if you haven't researched the prequisites then it won't show on f5, however when R5 comes around this might be a moot issue as I think Kage's new research panel coding will solve the problem.
It's an interesting problem though because as Giga you can steal boost2 and dis2 and you will have boost1 and dis1 researched (I think?) so maybe its some core problem with specific items.

we just didnt have ab3 anymore. i launched a bbr after the sup rebuilt thinking i'd have ab3s again but it was ab1s. i didnt look carefully to see if i could change the loadout and swap it for ab3s though, i didnt think that was a necessary extra step.

I encountered a similar problem the other day where we had minepacks and adv giga figs but clicking "default load" didn't mount the minepacks.
Thet the other problem where I stole a tp2 and docked with it on the probe slot, then launched with it, I think we then lose our adv exp and I dock again with the tp2 still in my probe slot but the next time I launch it was a tp1.
