What?: Beta Test for the 5th Release of FAZ to test out new features (Alliances :psyched: )and find new bugs
Where?: The Beta Servers (run ASGS, click on Allegiance then select Beta Mode)

More detailed info

The beta server is currently running R5 Beta version 090625* linky beta server
The latest client is R5 Beta version 09.06.25** linky beta client
Updated artwork files required for this version (ASGS should get them automatically) but here is the linky artwork files (put them in the artwork\dev folder)
Download the new client and replace the Allegiance.exe in your beta folder. DO NOT replace your regular Allegiance.exe***If you have connected to the beta server before just launch ASGS (via Allegiance Online), goto to the Allegiance tab, check Beta Mode. Now login. Check the motd (message of the day). Check the version of your client <esc> menu. Make sure it is the version listed above. If you have not connected to the beta server before you will need to set up the beta registry keys. There are a few installers floating around. I will track them down or you can search for them in the forums.

*Please note R4 (and most earlier R5) clients will not connect (or if they connect to the lobby they won't connect to the server), neither will older versions of the server.
**You will need a version of the client that is the same or HIGHER version than the server.
***If you mess up here you can fix things by using Update / Repair Critical Files under Help in ASGS. IF you were using the Alpha graphics client you will need to re-download it (or back it up and then copy it back into place).

It's good to get in the habit, and just because it's 6 months old doesn't mean new issues can't be found. Not all alliance bugs are known, as near as I can tell (or at least, we discovered a whole bunch that weren't in the known issues thread...) Anywho, it may not be terribly useful, but there's no reason *not* to try out Beta for a bit one day of the week, and who knows, we might get lucky and stumble on some issue that it's useful to know more about despite the date of the last release.

Edit: Besides, it's a vicious cycle. It seems some devs are discouraged from pursuing development because they feel there isn't enough testing. So you get, basically: "Why should I test an old release?" "Oh yeah? Why should I make a new release if no-one wants to do any testing?" So if we don't test what we have now, devs won't work as much on new stuff, and it will take even longer before we have newer stuff to test. I don't mind testing a 6 months old beta release now, because maybe if enough of us do, devs will see there's interest and a willingness to test, and will perhaps be more encouraged to keep working on it. ^_^

Edit: That's weird... this was meant to be a response to a post that seems to be in another thread.

Yeah thats what happens when the Beta Allegiance.exe overwrites the R4 Allegiance.exe, Beta Allegiance.exe should stay in the Beta Folder, no crossovers, my rules!

They should not over write each other but I believe the beta exe goes where the beta keys tell it to and if you have an old set if beta keys they may point to the same location.

To be on the safe side, before trying the beta, make a copy of allegiance.exe to another location (this is essential if you are running the graphics 'alpha'). If you have problems after playing the beta, copy it back, if that fails, repair/update critical files (with beta mode unchecked of course).

On a side note, I will be updating the beta server either tonight or tomorrow and you may not be able to get in. I will post again after I've done the update. You may need to 'temporarily' download the beta client for a link and copy it into place manually. This is beta testing folks. We will do our best to have things back to auto updating (as much as we can) for Wed testing.

Beta server updated. The new client is NOT available via ASGS yet. I cannot upload it from my office and will have to do it in a few hours.

You can get it from here http://fazdev.alleg.net/FAZ/Allegiance_R5beta_090625.zip

Replace the beta Allegiance.exe with the on in the zip (after renaming it). Do NOT replace your regular allegiance.exe

If you mess up, repair/update critical files should fix things.

This is beta testing so things will be in a bit of flux. We will do our best to have things in good shape for beta test Wed's or other published tests. But please stop in and help test at other times, you don't need a special event to do it.
