Just for info

Avira premium suite (with Firewall) doesn't like Allegiance. You have to uninstall it.
Is there ANY good (not free) solution WITH firewall which Alleg can handle?

Just a thought... is your computer behind a router? If so, you really don't need a software firewall. The router is a better one.

NOD versions 3.X and 4.X have a decent software firewall. I use NOD in combination with Alleg and it works fine. Payware, suggest you do some research if this is the right solution for you.

If you have VMWare virtual machines running, NOD protect those connections too. Then you have to set subnets inside NOD or your virtual machine does not communicate outside your box.

On Vista, use a standalone firewall which lets you explicitly define rules. You'll be able to let Alleg through. Not one AV with bundled firewall that I've tested works on Vista. However, NOD32 AV with a separate firewall solution should theoretically work.

One can just use the vista firewall, if works just fine if you control it with this nice freeware:

I have been using it for months now and it rocks. :)

If you have XP try Zone Alarm Extreme Security or Zone Alarm Pro.
