Not really sure how the yawns are justified. Complaining about only 3 factions seems weak, and implies that more factions = more awesome. It's honestly difficult to effectively balance new factions when you're trying to make them distinct. And many of the world's best strategy games don't even have factions. No factions in chess. Go only has a single kind of playing piece.
I agree that it'd be nice to have some way to practice the game offline. But AI troops will never prepare you for what happens when you're trying to control a group of live human beings. Yes the story is weak and uninspiring, but Allegiance was never about story. Allegiance was always about delivering solid gameplay, which it does in spades. There are no original stories out there anyway, certainly not original stories about conflict.
It kind of reminds me of some of the comments I saw directed at Total Annihilation back in the starcraft era.
"Only two factions, wtf?"
"What's with this supply and demand economy? It's so stupid!"
"Two factions locked in an endless war for dominance? What a boring story."
What got overlooked was the mindblowing consequences of making a game where turtling was not a valid strategy. Where you had to push and push and push until there was nothing left of the other side. Where there was no such thing as "too many factories". It was brilliant, and I'm so very much looking forward to "Supreme Commander".
Alleg did the same thing to the multiplayer genre. It asked the question "what happens when you make it impossible to win the game without teamwork?"
I do feel sorry for the reviewer's experience however. Seems he really spent most of his time reviewing the player base and the backstory. Too bad he didn't actually review the game.
Maybe a repost, but i must say, this review of our beloved game is rediculous.

QUOTE But on the visitor side you wait for an average of (and I’m not kidding) 15 to 20 minutes for the few, pre–teen "expert" players to battle it out in a vocabulary–challenged boasting contest over who will be the team’s commander. After this bout of pre–pubescence, and testosterone–driven overtures, the battle finally begins.
QUOTE Then the verbal wars start again as pilots argue with the Commander over the best courses of action and strategies.[...] This game certainly will win the award for the Most Arguments in a Multiplayer Game, hands down.
I dunno. Some comments of his sound spot-on.

current version r158 new beta as of jan 23 2012Only people who can review alleg are the people who are hooked on it.

People who are hooked on alleg, dont have time to write reviews.

Imagine if i've installed Hearts of Iron 2 (best game ever after alleg), played for 2 minutes. And said.
What, no hyper animations. What, where are the options. How to build economy. Wtf. Uninstall. Write a review after 5 mins playing

It's not physically possible to play HoI2 for the first 2 minutes after you install it.Mpane wrote:QUOTE (Mpane @ Sep 20 2006, 08:58 PM) Imagine if i've installed Hearts of Iron 2 (best game ever after alleg), played for 2 minutes.
In reality, you spend three months clicking stuff semi-randomly and watching the consequences in complete and utter amazement.
Only after this initiatory period do you start grasping the sheer overpowering complexity of the thing, and are ready to start playing.
(yes, I love HoI2 as well)

RT: The number of typical responses decreases exponentially as the number of joke options increases.

Exactly why i was making a comparison. Its imposible to play alleg after 2 minutes.Dengaroth wrote:QUOTE (Dengaroth @ Sep 20 2006, 09:55 PM) It's not physically possible to play HoI2 for the first 2 minutes after you install it.
The games who bring greatest longterm gaming happiness, usually need time and effort so i refuse the 2 hr playing reviews
I started playing last year sometime in July. Now I haven't even played since the beginning of summer. Too busy, and lack of community started pissing me off when I wanted to play instead of listening to people complain about teams. No clue if anything has changed, which I hope so, but as a newb I was hooked on the game. I disliked the vets at the time, and still sometimes do, because they would be very rude when your trying to learn the controls and game. The newb server was great, and would end up learning from other newbs just because vets were caught up in their own high and mighty verbal arguments while waiting for people to join and start a game. Hmmm, well look at that. Several newbs playing on newb server, trying to learn the game. Wow, if they had some help, it would have been no time they could be playing actual games with vets without being bitched at.Mpane wrote:QUOTE (Mpane @ Sep 21 2006, 08:21 AM) Exactly why i was making a comparison. I sopose what I'm saying, and correct me if it has changed any, but everyone needs to chill on the newbs when they come in. That way we wont loose so many newbs, and can have more than just one game of 30 players going on in a lobby. That way everyone can have fun!! =D
About the review though...eh some things were dead on, other things, well probably could improve, but personally, I love the game!
Agno`
last night there was 5 (five!) games running in the same time. /wub.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":iluv:" border="0" alt="wub.gif" />
of course, one had 30, another 12, third 6, fourth 4, and fifth 2 players, but it was really nice sight.
from what i can tell the community IS changing, for the better, no matter how slow that may be.
and just filter off the non-pleasant part /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

1) For the record, so long as I'm not already in a game, any newbie at any time may PM me and ask me to go over to another server for help. I'll happily oblige these requests, so long as the newbies have done the training missions and read the crash course at the academy.
2) There are certain points to which the reviewer was (and still is) on target, however I believe that in the main he misunderstood the point of gameplay (that being teamwork) and traded even-handedness for blanket skepticism (seriously, yawn at alephs?!?! Does he want us to traverse sectors on a magical carriage pulled by pink unicorns?).
3) This review was obviously done 6 years ago, and really matters as much as most things done 6 years ago.
