this is what is in that file...

"# Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost"

According to this, Its a sample file?

Nah, the "sample" part of it is the bits that are commented out (i.e. lines starting with #).

Just add the two lines that Mo supplied and you should be all set.

No it isn't.

Add the two lines at the end and save it.

DANGER, ONLY PROCEED IF YOU KNOW HOW THIS WORKS

WARNING, ONLY USE THE HOSTS FILE WHICH HAS NO EXTENSION.

The <hosts> file with NO extensions can be found here:

Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts

Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Windows XP Home c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

FIRST make a BACKUP of the HOSTS file, and safe it at a safe place (COPY/PASTE).

SECOND, open the HOSTS file with NOTEPAD or any other ASCII editor, DON'T USE WORD OR SO.

THIRD, add the lines given by the author AT THE BOTTOM OF THE EXISTING HOSTS FILE. Do not throw lines away who are already in the hosts file.

69.93.201.150 / insert 2 spaces here / asgs.alleg.net
69.93.201.149 / insert 2 spaces here / autoupdate.alleg.net

FOURTH, safe the file. NOTEPAD puts an <.txt> behind the filename (so it looks like HOSTS.TXT). Remove the <.txt> in Explorer or so.

Start Alleg, you should be able to play now.

Here is how my HOSTS file looks like (inside notepad):

127.0.0.1 localhost
69.93.201.150 asgs.alleg.net
69.93.201.149 autoupdate.alleg.net

I've added those two lines to by hosts file, but the Games List button is still greyed out. /doh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="doh.gif" />

I didn't have to, with XP Pro. Not sure how it is with Win9x though.

Will we have to undo the changes to the host files when the DSN failure is over?

Anyway, a notice should be made in News. In Helpline, Pkk pointed me here (thanks again) so there shouldn't be any problems.
