Some time ago, when playing "Grid" map, i noticed how nicely it looked like a 3-d cube with bases in the center of 2 of its sides. From that moment i got an idea to make some cool 3d map, and then use its planar projection in AME.
But why would one need so many dimensions, 2 are usually enough! The only reason i found was making a 4-player FFA map. Usually these have one flaw i dislike alot - players are usually placed in a square position, and ones who start diagonally from each other dont usually get to meet and fight each other. Becuse distance between them is 1,4 time longer than between adjacent players.
So, whats the solution? The Tetrahedron! It has 4 vertices at the same distance form each other - right what we need. Its too simple figure though, so we'd need to make something to it to make it into map.
The result is the following picture (yeh, i know its hard to understand, but i suck at 3d-modeling)

Eeach vertex of the large tetrahedron (black and dark-gray) is home sector for one of the teams. It leads to 3 sectors near each team's home (purple triangles). These 4 triangles are connected to each other (tetrahedron edges) and the inner tetrahedron (dark purple)
The inner tetrahedron (red) is placed inside the outer one, put upside down. (just like with triangles, where you can put a smaller triangle inside a larger one this way). This gives complete symmetry and distance equality for every team to every other team.
Putting it all on the 2d surface wasnt easy, and i couldnt avoid having lots of line intersections, but i tried to make it as clear as possible.
Here are the two versions of it - the second one has 2 "middle" sectors, accesible through inner tetrahedron.

This first map is more like a concept and preactice in making planar projections, since 4-team FFA games arent played often. People dont like these because these games usually become 2v2 after some time. And usually those 2v2 games are actually just two 1v1 games played at once, because of that diagonal distance thing. Unlike those, even if this map is played 2v2, players will have to fight both opponents at once.

Anyway, i thought that making a thread dedicated only to a single map (which even wont prolly ever be played) stupid, so i made a more regular 1v1 map. I was thinking of a map like one of the maps in Warhammer: DOW - 2 players start very close to each other, and have to race forwards to get control over the resources located on the opposite side of the map, while raiding each other's bases at the same time.
After actually finishing the layout, i tried giving different shapes or rotating it. Here are the previews (yep, just reshaped)

The map gives great variety of strategic choices:
The enemy garr is only 3 jumps away so u can push something to it, securing a few sectors behind it. There are two "mid" sectors - one helping cover the distant sectors, and the other one leading to enemy base in 2 or 3 jumps.

Wouldn't it be easier and clearer to draw a tetrahedron in orthagonal projection? Thinking of that, an octagonal could make a decent map too...

Nope, it #&%$s up the view of the inner tetrahedron - some lines get layered on each other.

The "tetrahedron" maps are a bit too busy, but I like the look of your other map (I prefer the first layout).

People just take stuff too seriously I think. Except IB, of course.
