What is it, and what is the difference between:
256
512
1024
2048
And which reduces lag / reduces frame jumpiness.
Map Texture Size
It is the number of pixels in the image which is used (mapped onto) the 2d and 3d textures.
I'd stick with 256 unless you have a fairly powerful system with a good graphics card and you care if the ships, bases, and rocks look a little better when you are zoomed in. You'll need to download the higher resolution graphics in any event to see any difference with anything higher than 256.
256 will be the easiest for your system to process.
256 is really 256x256 and 512 is 512x512, etc.

DOG PROPERTY LAWS:
2. If it's in my mouth, it's mine.
[unless it tastes bad, then it is yours.]
GT, effix and pheonix all come with 512x512 textures standard. So even with default alleg you get some visual benefit by using 512 texture settings.
