Update .NET 2.0 with Service Pack 1, see if that helps.
Beez, stick to your own damn thread please :/
Update Loop Failure
Just to be clear, I only have framework 1.1 on my machine. Are you saying I need to install 2.0, then install the 2.0 service pack?
here is something called Net Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86) and something called Net Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x64). Would I then install the service pack for net 2.0?
Is 86 the correct one? (although to be truthful, this is a company laptop and I often have to review all kinds of sales/marketing multimedia programs and I wonder if this is going to screw things up and not let them play -- I have no idea what net framework is used for).
Again, just to be clear, I currently only have framework 1.1 onboard my computer. I would think that that would suffice.

For the time being, the various .Net 1.1 deployments (1.1, SP for 1.1 and the hotfix) are sufficient. You do not have to install 2.0 at this time. I have it installed and I can run Alleg just fine. But DO NOT apply the SP1 for 2.0. (careful.. MS wants to push it via auto-update)
.Net won't affect graphics and the usual stuff one finds on a company lappy. .Net is primarily intended for networking stuff. Primer on .Net in case you want additional info.

Just wondering if the new installer package is due out anytime soon. I just thought I would check back in, download the game again and try once more. No luck, same error. After a clean install, I click the ASGS login button, it updates. I click again, it updates. I click again, I get the 'unknown error' and can go no further. Ah well, I guess I'll try back in another couple of weeks (btw, it doesn't help to download the two separate ASGS files to my Alleg directory either).
FreeB, SP1 for .NET 2.0 no longer breaks ASGS.FreeBeer wrote:QUOTE (FreeBeer @ Apr 13 2008, 07:39 AM) For the time being, the various .Net 1.1 deployments (1.1, SP for 1.1 and the hotfix) are sufficient. Child, did you reinstall using a freshly downloaded installer? I've looked at it more closely, and it looks like a broken xml config file or messed up registry values. Try wiping Alleg clean, double check if installer removed the Allegiance folder AND the registry keys, manually clean up the remianing elements and reinstall using fresh installer. Apply Pook's patch and try it. Make sure you are using an administrator account to install and that Allegiance installs on system drive.
Yep, I just downloaded and installed the game last night from this site's download page, so it should be fresh. It installs the game C:/programs/microsoft games/Allegiance, so that should be good. The installer does not delete the alleg folder (though it's empty and doesn't make a difference as I've deleted it manally several times).
Oddly, whenever I've uninstalled the game, then reloaded it, my screenname and password is still populated when ASGS opens for the first time. So that suggests that something is still left after the uninstall (unless ASGS immediately polls to it's server based on machine ID?).
I don't have administrator access to this machine (at least I assume I don't since it's a company laptop), so I'm not sure I could change the registry keys anyway. But I'll try that next. Can you tell me how would I find and delete the keys if I could?
Thx in advance.

It's not clearing the registry keys... That's why your callsign and other settings are remembered through the reinstalls. That might be the problem (a broken registry key). Try pressing Windows Key+R and typing 'regedit' in the box that pops up. If you can access that, find entries for Allegiance in a branch called 'LOCAL_MACHINE' and delete them after removing Alleg. Then reinstall again. See if that works.
...nope, doesn't work, I still get the same error (although I was able to find the key and delete the allegiance key -- I also tried deleting the Microsoft Games entry, no difference).
Here's the log entries from ASGS. When I first open ASGS, I get the following log entries: (I get the first line because the previous time I've opened ASGS, I have to exit from the 'unknown error' message (see previous screen shots):
QUOTE • ASGS was not shut down normally. Saving debug log as DUMP_04282008233557.log
• Initializing
• Reading Settings
• Logging Option: SIMPLE
• Loading MRU Callsigns
• Loading Form Position
• Checking Installation
• Checking OOBE
• Ready
Then, when I click the ASGS 'Login' button, I get the following lines:
QUOTE • Checking for system updates
• Checking for existing processes
• Saving Settings
• Saving MRU Callsigns
• Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1).
error CS0009: Metadata file 'c:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Allegiance\ASGSClient.exe' could not be opened -- 'There isn't metadata in the memory or stream'
Does that make any kind of sense?

Here it be : ) I don't know how logs are generated but I think this combines a couple of login attempts (I think I have about eight of these log files in my directory but they all say pretty much the same thing).
