I believe that ImmZ has had this same problem. IIRC, his problem was the video card drivers being too up to date

When you say had, do you mean had and fixed it or had and used another card? I'm not sure where I'd look for past drivers or which build I'd start at.

Is this a similar situation as with the .NET 3.0 business? New drivers that Alleg hasn't yet been modified to work with?

The sound issue: try to meddle with the in-game sound settings. Turn the sound accel on/off, try different qualities. It helps sometimes.
The graphics issue: does the artefacting (smears/smudges) happen in other apps/games?

I'll try the sound.

No, it doesn't.

Edit: Alright, I fiddled with the sound settings and found that default quality without acceleration is the key. Oddly enough, all of the graphical and UI issues I had seem to have vanished as well... I'm going to slowly add my texture packs back and then finally CortUI and see if everything is still in working order.

And one more thing before I go, if I test in the training exercises and everything works there, can I be certain that everything will work online too?

Everything seems to be in working order with all of the addons installed and running. What caused all the issues is beyond me but at least it's solved.

Noooooooooo.

You n00bs.

The issue is caused by drivers from Catalyst 7.8 to 7.11. Get Catalyst 7.12s or above to solve your problem.

Sound, well, that can be solved by turning off sound hardware accel in the game options.
