But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.

Its actually a myth that people believed the world was flat in Columbus' time. He met resistance because it was commonly believed that the earth was larger than he predicted (thinking he would reach Asia, instead of the unknown continent of North America) which turned out to be correct. So, they were right to laugh at him!

nobody said that people thought the world was flat

they said that they laughed at columbus

which is true, because they also knew the diameter of the world and knew that columbus had 0 chance of getting to india before his food and water ran out. they laughed at columbus because he was being a $#@!ing idiot. he just happened to get lucky.

Interesting. Very interesting.

I'm guessing they calculated it by seeing how much farther they could see when perched atop something high on some plain?

Actually, all you need is a stick, the ground, and a few rocks.
