I read about a RTS core often, though about doing it, but was somewhat busy. I got a bit too much free time lately and ended up playing late games. These are a waste of time. I commanded one where my bomber pilot(who had no numbers), managed to fly 1k away from the enemy bios adv sup with a heavy bomber, ab3 and a bunch of nans. One of his gunner had no clue how to turret, but the other ended up podding most of the enemy team. The bomber pilot then ripped home. These type of games made me think that something had to be done and the RTS core could be it.
If anyone wanna do one, I could give some ideas.
Generally, This core would have no launchable ship, you could only build drones. People could then play 1 vs 1 with drones without having to suffer from the early morning games.
I could do it in my spare time, but if anyone wanna give a try to ICE and would be interested, it would be interesting, otherwise, I'll just try to do something really basic just so we can have some fun.

Would be interesting if it worked, but limited AI might make it frustrating. I think its worth a try though. But isn't there one set limit to the number of all types of drones? So in a 4 miner/drone game you could only have 4 drone fighters, 4 drone ints, etc. That would be a big problem.
edit: I guess you could have multiple options purchasable..like Fighter Squadron 1, Fighter Squadron 2, etc so you could build up to a set number of fighters. This should have a limit or else the game would get out of control. The downside would be that the limit is not a global limit, but on the amount of each ship. So it would change the game quite a bit by really forcing you to buy all tech bases in order to built the highest quantity of ships. Tech bases would probably have to be scrapped completely or at least have limited use. Perhaps have some specialized fighter but you are limited to only like 4 or 8 of them where you can have many more standard fighters.
Also another problem with drones is you can't pick the loadout, so you'd have to have a lot of different drone options with different loadouts. Drones can't fire missiles so can't use them. Couldn't do tp drops unless a human controlled player did one.
Basically without major code changes you'd have to completely dumb down the game to get any kind of balance. No missiles. Probably limited types of ships, maybe not limited but a far different set then with standard allegiance: Scout, Fighter, Bomber (with particle ab cannon like Rix) would be the main ships with maybe something like a guardian and maybe a devastator as a capitol ship. Some other slight variations. Probably want to go with a fairly low amount, but stronger ships rather than have many weaker ships primarily because I'm not sure AI targeting would work well and probably won't want to sit there and continuously order your drones to attack large numbers of ships individually.
Maybe like a limit around 24 fighters, 4 specialized fighters from each tech base, 4 bombers, 4 devastators (obviously would need them to be less powerful than they are now since the limit would need to be this high), 4 guardians, 4 scouts.
I suppose instead of regular probes you could have slow moving very weak probe drones with a high limit. Could probably do the same for tp drones as well but I think it would be really hard to balance that. Probably would have to have low energy and huge signature and the rip time on bombers/devastators would need to be quite high. More like some kind of assault ship w/ big sig.

My idea was to start from scratch. Using standard allegiance for a RTS would be silly.
There can be many interesting thing to do.
There's like 4 variables to play with:
Speed, scan range, sig and power. I think it would be possible to come up with interesting combos. I don't think that having no boosters or missiles will bring the fun down.
For the number of drones, in R4, there's a setting to have 9 drones instead of 4. That said, I was more thinking about a game that made every drone count rather than a unit spam one. 9 drones of every kind sounds a good limit.
