I agree - AEM's is great. The only change I'd make is reorganize the 6 'sections' so the most frequently needed stuff is higher than the less-frequently needed stuffs.

All in all, AEM's main page and his skeleton proposal were really good.

Each Zone gets a proper page (or better a proper namespace, or wiki, or whatever the software calls it) to organise its content. Selected users can add News items (coolest thing would be one per zone). Hot content is a wiki page that is important for some reason (very popular, etc.).

The Donate link will not go directly to Thalgor's account, but will sport a list of Alleg-related entities (like the EU Zone servers) that ask for donations.

AEM's looks good, but when you place content in it it gets too long. We tried it with our squad wiki: we couldn't just place all the links on one page.

You don't need news on the wiki, that's what the forum front page is for. As far as I am aware all ZLs can currently post news items on that page.

Swap Hot Content with News then. A news link is still useful.

Why? To access the wiki you need to come through the news page.

If the wiki was designed to be the main community portal then you'd be totally right to put news on there. As it is it's a resource attached to the main site and as such probably shouldn't replicate stuff on the main pages.

There should be a link back to the main site though, in a sidebar or something.

Yeah my main page example was just a very rough example and still needs work. Since it seems many of you like the draft, I'll post a more detailed and polished version later today. I'll reorganize it and possibly add onto it to make it more efficient.

To achieve a column-like layout with Wiki formatting looks impossible, but it isn't.

Notice the table: the actual content is placed in three templates (Template:Main_Page_Left, Template:Main_Page_Center and Template:Main_Page_Right). This allows for a very simple but effective page.

EDIT: Of course you can do it with plain HTML, but HTML makes the page harder to maintain and edit.

I'd put all the links you'd need for freeallegiance on the left side panel. News, Forum, Blogs, Downloads, Banlist, Squad Rosters, etc.
