i remember in the first game i commanded (my second game) on i dont know what money settings, i was rather ticked that my faction (IC) didnt have refinerys (not that i knew what a refinery did anyways). I quicky discovered to my amazement that some ship called an interceptor could totally slaughter a fighter. Some guy named Lt_Duong(0) aka VoobMan@SF joined my team and urged me to buy bombers... why you ask? so we could use them as gunships! `4.
my career as an exp whore started that game... immediately afterwards i read the section labeled "dogfighting" in Alleg Academy... learning sidethrusting... it was amazing how that little trick prolonged my ships life!
Like any other newbie, i liked to command... however i liked putting the newbie server on "veteran server settings" (High/High/Normal -- what can i say i wanted to imitate Allegiances finest) and racking up command win after command win because my opponents would waste all their money very fast while i focused on my newly found Expansion. I was always gigglecorp, why? because their bases were dirt cheap and i could spam them all over the place without much worry. It only took me and my faithful companion Duong to bomb our enemies off the map.
Those were the days... /wub.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":iluv:" border="0" alt="wub.gif" /> ------ it was also fun to command against everyones favorite cadet.... MightyG!
what were your guy's newbie server/beta experiances (if you still remember that far back!)
The world is ending as we know it!
Hey...I take offense to that. /tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> Comanding a game is quite hard. I've only done it once and we lost, though my team keeps saying that I did great(it wasn't great if we lostAEM wrote:QUOTE (AEM @ Jun 14 2007, 01:57 PM) Here's a summary of the typical game for you.3 or so people in the lobby begging to try command. One team's commander is a hot shot and won't let anyone else command and the game starts. With settings on outrageous he'll buy every base he can right from the start. And then from then on he might just upgrade shipyard technology. And lets even limit this to a 2 teamer to keep things simpler. The other team's commander is playing his first game, doesn't know what a commander is, and they will have nothing researched. On top of this he's probably AFK 90% of the game.Midway through the game half of the players on each side will have stopped donating.Nearly everyone on each team will be flying around in their own sector, possibly shooting at a base with their gat gun or in a bomber dogfighting an interceptor. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if at any one point there were more people in the game dogfighting in bombers and shooting bases with regular guns and missiles than blowing up bases in bombers or dogfighting using their fighters.By the three hour mark with no side too far ahead, at most 3/4 of the map is scouted out.The imbalance setting is on NA or Auto and one team gets considerably more players than the other and eventually wins due to their superior capships finally outlasting the other team's basic fighters who were never quite able to destroy that IC exp. Of course if that team was giga instead of IC the game would be in favor of the non-giga team. Now there certainly are better games than others but the kind of scenario above probably isn't uncommon.

I played ONE game on newbie server... as a (5) or so (it was back when it took like a moth to get to (5) too). It was when a certain player named 'Larask' wouldn't let me of his team telling me to 'go to the $#@!ing newbie server noob and don't bug the big boys' or sumthin like that... So I went. It was horrible. Out 9 game. Map the size of E-W, 3v4 or something like that. Each team had bases in 2 sectors, a SY and all players in vettes or something like that... What I remember is that walking a giggles cruiser 7-8 sectors to blow their SY and garr (stuffed nicely in one sector) took next to forever... After that I said to myself: 'NEVER again' /mrgreen.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="mrgreen.gif" />

Back in my day, allegiance was Just starting to gain players again, it was even more poorly advertised and I found it by shear desperation of needing a new game to play. Back then you had people who had more patience with you. back when the community was desperate for a large amount of players so we could get a 10vs10 going. 20 verse 20 was a big deal. I was previously playing Infantry which was in it;s beta and the golden days of its life. the second it became P2P it suddenly sucked. they took out all of the fun things like mass battles what worked so well in Mech infantry and what not.
then I discovered wulfram 2 and finally I stumbled into allegiance. The sheer ingenuity was what hooked me.
one of the first times I commanded it was a newbie comm vs me with vets flying under me. we ended up getting capitals, both sides, and through both teams had capitols out they never were in range of each other.
other than that I remember most getting brutal verbal abuse from Nak, he was like a music teacher that tried to break your knuckles every time you screwed up. and then there were other people saying, your gonna take a lot of @#(! but if you stick with the game and keep at it you'll eventually be accepted.

When in cadet you get a chance to COM on the (when I did it) newbie server. That was the hardest thing about the cadet course IMHO. Trying to get a newbie to give up the COM was like trying to get blood from a stone. /laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

No newbie servers for us. Just thrown into the lions den.
My early days things were a bit reversed. It was the MS devs and testers who got paid to play who kicked butt. The original BETA testers (non MS Research employees) had some basic documentation handed to them It was a small group. As each BETA phase expanded more and more came in. The established squads would grab players and train within. Throw in the forums we used, the meetings held with the devs, etc. and communicatin was quick and easy.
I think it was the last BETA that went public about 3 months before the Gold release where a large influx of people occured. Then it just escalated from there.
About this time Star Wars (X-wing?) was out and I remember getting my invite. I spent time a lot of time reading after installing. I got my butt handed to me for the first week until I finally got my controls setup the way I wanted. It was a complete different setup then what I used for SW.
But I had a great group of guys who would help me along.
Most embarrasing moment in the first couple of weeks? Solap was on my stealth bomber as an observer (They could do this in BETA - I am sure the code is still there somewhere) I am going nuts why the hell the base is not dying. He PM's me, use ABs not Hunters /blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="
