Mumble is a OSS Teamspeak alternative a few squads (including RT and SF) are using. This article will guide you through the basic setup of the Mumble client.


1 Download and install Mumble

Links to the latest version of Mumble are available on the Mumble homepage. Mumble installs like any other program for Windows and is also available on Linux and Mac.


2 Run through the first time configuration wizard
This step is optional if you are just going to use Mumble just once (for example, if you are a cadet going to sit in a squad game).

The first time configuration is self-explanatory and, if you are going to use Mumble regularly, it is strongly suggested you follow it from start to end. Do not forget to create a certificate or use an existing one for painless registration!

If you are having trouble with voice activation configuration, run through the Push to talk section below.


3 Add the Mumble server you want to connect to

You can find the address and port of the mumble server a squad hosts by visiting their squad page.

  Using a mumble:// link

If a mumble:// link is provided, it will automatically open and connect Mumble to the appropriate server. Mumble links look like this:

  Using server and port information
This is what your Mumble Server Connect dialog should look when you will have completed this step.
  1. Open Mumble; the Mumble Server Connect screen will be displayed.
  2. Click on the Add new button.
  3. Fill in the form with the required information and confirm with OK. Take care to choose a username you are comfortable sticking with.
  4. You are returned to the Mumble Server Connect window and a new entry is added under Favourites.

If you wanted to connect you'd now double click on the new entry. Press Cancel instead.


4 Fine tune your configuration
This step is optional if you are just going to use Mumble just once (for example, if you are a cadet going to sit in a squad game).
4.1 Configure the overlay (recommended)
Play the video of these steps being performed. (Flash required)
  1. From the Configure menu, open Settings and check the Advanced checkbox.
  2. Click on Overlay. There are many settings here, but the following is particularly important to configure for Allegiance's large teams.
  3. Click on Show everyone and pick Show only talking instead.
  4. Click on Apply to commit the changes.


4.2 Configure push to talk (optional)

  1. From the Configure menu, open Settings and check the Advanced checkbox, if you haven't already.
  2. From the Audio Input tab, click on Voice activity and choose Push to talk instead.
  3. Click on Shortcuts and create one with Add. A new line in the listbox is added.
  4. Click on Unassigned under the Action column and choose Push to talk.
  5. Click on the white space under the Shortcut column and press the key you want to assign for push to talk.
  6. Click on Apply to commit the changes.

Tip: Tap the push to talk button twice quickly to toggle transmission on and off. This frees your hands if you are going to transmit for a long time. You must configure DoublePush time in the Audio Input tab for this option to be enabled.


4.3 Tweak your audio quality (optional)

Under the default settings, the audio you send is only marginally better than the TS quality. If your bandwith allows you to increase the quality of the audio you send, you might consider doing that.

  1. From the Configure menu, open Settings.
  2. From the Audio Input tab, use the Quality slider. Move the slider to the left to decrease quality and free up bandwith for Allegiance. Move the slider to the right to be heard more clearly on Mumble.


4.4 Tweak your text to speech settings (optional)

If the text to speech reading of messages annoys you, you can tweak it.

  1. From the Configure menu, open Settings and check the Advanced checkbox, if you haven't already.
  2. Open the Messages tab.
  3. For each event (row in the list box), TTS reading of the event will be read if the checkbox under the Text-to-Speech column is checked. Tweak your settings accordingly.

Tip: To have audio notificatons instead of text to speech, use the checkboxes in the Sound-file column. You can preview the sound messages by single clicking on the item under the Path column and change it by double clicking.



5 Connect to the server

From the Server menu choose Connect. The Mumble Server Connect screen reopens. Double click on the server you want to connect to.

Now you are connected and can talk on the server, either through voice activation or push to talk. Woohoo!


6 Register with the server

For yours and the admins' convenience, we recommend you register with the mumble server.

Right click on yourself in the tree view (you are the user shown in bold) and pick Register. This ties your certificate to your nick on the server; others will not able to use your nick and you will not be able to use other nicks. In addition, server admins can add your registered nick to groups and grant it additional permissions.

Server admins can unregister you, but you cannot unregister yourself. Server admins can also force your registration, for your information.

A few things:

  • You can join a channel by double clicking on it, if you have the appropriate permissions.
  • You can send text messages to a channel or player by clicking on it and using the text box in the bottom left hand corner

Tip: Text messages will be played back using text-to-speech to you and all other recipients. That's something you should consider before you share URLs using this feature.
