My two cents:
1. We do have to interfere in every civil war not only because of commercial interests (cruel but inevitable) but also because of safety. Unstable (read "un-american") governments and regimes can obtain nukes and threaten everyone, thus its better to nip it in the bud.
2. Regarding the french (which was kind of random), I remind everyone of Napoleon. A man who, according to Hugo, "embarrassed God". Also, the French did help the U.S maintain naval equivalency against the British during the revolution.
3. As for Qaddafi, I agree with most posters that replacing a rock with a boulder doesn't do much good for anyone.
4. I also think Obama made a huge mistake in bringing home the troops too early from Iraq (even as he was advised not to do so by Petraeus and other experts). The current situation in Iraq can attest to this. Of course, he made campaign promises and I can at least respect that he kept them (somewhat), but with the way things are going, years of fighting and american lives may have all been for naught. (That's not to say we should've gone to Iraq in the first place, but thats a another story)
5. Foreign policy is always motivated personal interest, every philanthropic act is an illusion (e.g supplies to Ukraine from Russia), however much good it does, it must above all things do US good (and by US I mean United States)
6. Bide your time for commercial space-flight and fly to troubles we know not of.
