Any way we could set up a newbie zone to go against the computer? I am horrible in this game and would think that this would help us newbies alot!! Thanks for reading and maybe giving it a thought and a try.

Hi sara.

There is no AI to play against.

If you want to learn how to fly without people always shooting you, create your own game via the 'create game' button in the lobby. Join a team and then click the checkbox by the other team which will make it a single team game. You then are allowed to force the launch.

This is great for exploring the factions and the tech trees.

If you really want to become a good pilot, I suggest the Cadet program.

I recommend staying on the main server. It is the general consensus that you will learn bad habits if you avoid main.

Good luck and please stick with it!

Hi there,

Once you've taken cadet just grab a pilot with a tag (thats an @something after their name) and ask them nicely that you need help and i'm sure they'll spend 10 mins with you :)

Good Luck!
I decided to relive the days gone by in my new blog.

Would be more than happy to answer any questions you have, that I am capable of answering. Just keep flying that scout around with gat nan and probes. It'll get better. Join CDT, you're already afflicted with our addiction, may as well commit to it. Oh, and welcome.

The second-last training mission (combat arena) is really the only place where you can fly against AI-controlled opponents. You can practice basic dogfighting there, though the AI drones aren't too smart, so doing so for too long wouldn't be particularly helpful. Still, that mission's helpful if you want to, say, try out new control schemes or just for a bit of practice. As everyone else's said, learning from other (human) players is the way to go.

Don't worry too much about being terrible at the game. As others have surely told you countless times, it has a steep learning curve, so *everyone* playing today was pretty horrible to start with.

The idea of creating an AI to play real, full games against has come up a few times in the past, but it would be a pretty complicated bit of code to write, and the volunteer code-writing people have a really long list of stuff they want and need to work on already... >_< Hey, one can dream. Maybe someday. ^_^

Hello, I m newbie too. I have completed tutorial of this game (except Commander part) and now i wanna play. So ppl like Archangel quite welcome. So - if there other newbies like me, lets meet in newbie server some time. Newbie server itself is empty all the time and other server rejected me so - if i dont find other newbies or just good people - I cant play this game at all. Lets make newbies meeting or something.

Sorry, my english is terrible, but i hope you understand my point.

Hmm, what do you mean when you say that the other server "rejected" you? If you mean a technical problem, you could post it in the "Help" forum (after reading their "read me first" thing, and checking the resources it lists there). I'm not an expert on this, but this might happen if the server you tried to join used a special core (version of the game) for which you would need to download the files. This only applies for a few cores, though, like the SW Core, since the ones that are commonly played (CC04, DN, etc.) don't require any additional downloads.

Or maybe the server on which the other game was running had a particularly bad connection for you? The two servers in use are GPZ, and Planet 2 (again, this is listed for every game in the table in the main lobby). Check whether you can join a game on either server, and see whether your problems with joining are related to which server it is. Planet 2 is most popular, but if it doesn't work for you, GPZ is used fairly often too.

Anyway, it would be very good to see more newbies making use of the newbie server when they first start playing, but once you have the basics down, joining the "real" (so to speak) games is a good idea, so you can learn more about the game from more experienced players.

~~

If you mean this wasn't a technical problem, but the *people* in the main game didn't let you join, that shouldn't happen. If one team doesn't let you on, try joining the other, and remember, while you're new, to join the team that has more points (the number in square brackets next to number of players), to help keep the game balanced. They should let you join, and there are rules saying they're not allowed to reject you just for being new.
