Massive brainfart aside, I agree with his bill. Funding lapses shouldn't cause government shutdowns in the first place, but if we're going to keep having shutdowns, at least they can be made to be less disruptive.

In saner times we could rely on wiser men to not to wantonly engage in reckless brinkmanship, not to hold the country hostage, over the objections of the majority, to demand purely symbolic, political ransoms -- but these are not sane times and these are not wise men.

What, you get payed as an intern? In MyLittleCountry™ you may be happy if you get something for travel and expenses. Intern is supposed to be part of the education to get work experience so the company gives you training. Sometimes they do offer good interns a job after graduating.

It depends on the field, but from what I've seen the vast majority of STEM interns are paid. Part of this is because even though there's a lot of competition to get into the slots, there's a lot of competition to really attract people to your work field, and HR departments are catching on that when I associate working with you with financial stability I'm far more inclined to work for you.

This is an old article that details it. But basically the thing is, if you want to attract the top-tier of intern (who you want to intern for you so you can shape them to be successful in your company), you have to pay them and treat them well.

i got 40k USD to intern in Seattle, i thought it was normal in the engineering world. but in europe it's generally much more difficult to find jobs for young people so it makes sense that companies don't need to bother paying them and can just refer to it as "just an extension of their education programme"

One of the things about Europe though is they have a sufficient social safetynet that surviving in Europe until you get one of those jobs you're looking for is much easier, and the process of getting the degree that doesn't get you a job doesn't leave you with a lifelong crippling debt.

The "sufficient social safety net" depends very much where in Europe you live... In some areas "sufficient" just means "prevent starvation". No wonder people jump on everything that moves to go to countries with better support.

It's pretty hard to starve to death in America.
